SYNOPSIS: ========= GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== The scale platforms that the instrument 180-liter dewars sit on are loose and can come in contact with the floor and bind, giving a false scale reading. French and crew are working on this, but in the meantime, we should gently move the dewars when checking the scale readings to make sure they are accurate. During the afternoon, Jon Brinkmann and Jim Annis checked some bug fixes in endNight and autoLskip in IOP v3_12_8. This is now the latest version, but v3_12_2 is still the current version. We started out the night with spectro cartridge 5, plate 270 mounted. Winds went over the closure limit, so we delayed opening. Seeing was extremely poor. Eric measured the fwhm to be between 5 and 6 arcsec while he was taking focus images. DIMM was having trouble calculating seeing but was able to measure values of between 3.5 and 4 .0 arcsec at 21:00. A note from the first shift: On Cartridge 5, fiber 10, we have a truely disgusting amount of "grot" on that fiber. The image is on shiva:/home/hayes if it is wanted. I can place it in a more general locale if required. We obtained an estimate of the seeing: 7'' seeing at 04:30, with the gusting at 33 mph, and sustained at over 25 mph. As the weather failed to improve, and twilight within the half-hour, we called it a night at 05:00.
