Subject: 51640 5Apr00 SDSS night log Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 07:49:40 -0600 (MDT) From: sjnk@apo.nmsu.edu (Scot Kleinman) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday April 5 2000 (MJD 51640) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long 1st shift (APO) Stephanie Snedden 1st shift (APO) Scot Kleinman 2nd shift (APO) Atsuko Kleinman 2nd shift (APO) Eric Neilsen PT (JHU) Visitors: THE PLAN: ========= Image stripe 37 S until about 01:30, then image a FASTT field, then the remaining SIRTF strips, 43 N&S (lambda: 22-37). SYNOPSIS: ========= We scanned 37S from lambda about -52 to 15, 43N from 22 to 37 and 43S from 22 to ~34 and got FASTT field J. The imager seemed to crash during one scan, so we had to recycle its power and iack it. After that, it was ok. Weather conditions remained good most of the night. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== This afternoon more work was done on the HVAC problem. The damper actuator was repaired and is now functional. However, the system will still not run in auto mode. Work will continue tomorrow. It was run in manual cooling mode from about 15:00 to 19:00 after which the exhaust fan was run. The drive that gave us trouble last night, id 2-1, was cleaned during the afternoon, and appears to be fine. Last night's problem may have been a bad tape (thanks for the help, Craig). Dan suggested (and everybody here agreed that it was a good idea), that we use the same tapes during afternoon checkout that we will archive to that night. We would simply do an initNight -tapeRelabel at the beginning of the night. This way we will know that we are starting with tapes that passed the afternoon checkout. We started out the night with the imager mounted. During twilight we focused and set up. At astronomical twilight we started a science scan at the beginning of stripe 37 S. Node Ship to FNAL Stay at APO id1 2496 2502 id2 2497 2503 id3 2498 2504 id4 2499 2505 id5 2500 2506 id6 2501 2507 Gang 2508 2509 We ended the drift ~1:30am at Lambda=15.5 and started a FASTT filed at stripe 10, lambda=14 (starting for setup at lambda=9). lskipping reported a 0.024 and 0.032 rotator error, so we changed it by 0.025 and at the end it said -0.005 +/- 0.006. We ended this at ~2:30 at an RA of 207.0. We next setup for 43N. Lskipping resulted in a -0.056 rotator correction. We started the science drift at a lambda of ~19.5 We started setting up for 43S at ~4:00. During the autoLskip, the readout stopped and all the nodes started complaining about wrong num of pix. Later, we got critical exec_boot and phase_boot errors: im> cc camcheck EXEC_BOOT UNACKNOWLEDGED PHASE_BOOT UNACKNOWLEDGED We then issued a readoutAbort command to all the nodes, recycled the power on the camera and issued an iack. This seemed to clear things up, so we tried again. Things worked. We were running low of time,so we opted not to change the rotation from the recommended value of -0.018 +/0.008 since the change was marginally significant given the uncertainties and we often see deviations of 0.020 or more by repeated lskips. By twilight, we were at lambda=~34, but we continued into twilight just in case it was useful until lambda=38, about 18 minutes past twilight. endDrift ended with some errors described in the Problem section below. endNight errored in a slightly different way than I've seen reported in the logs the past couple of nights (but maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention). Details are in the problem section. Tapes should be shipped as detailed above, even if the mail didn't get sent out. The new telescope spy camera, by the way is not nearly as good as the previous one. X did not work, so we did a hard boot. After that, the MCP was fine. The only thing we know of that had happened was that Peregrine had worked on and rebooted the TPM. 2) endDrift hiccup ------------------ im> endDrift Thu Apr 06 05:40:21 MDT 2000: stopping drift with: iccExec id1 id2 id3 id4 id5 id6 ad1 ad2 ad3 ad4 readoutEnd Thu Apr 06 05:40:58 MDT 2000: closed shutters Thu Apr 06 05:40:58 MDT 2000: endData completed Flavor of this run (science, bias, calibration, engineering, ignore, help) [science]: Stripe, Strip (e.g, 22,N or SS,N) [43,S]: Mountain estimate of the overall data quality (unknown, bad, acceptable, good) [unknown]: good Please provide a one line comment [] end in twilight Thu Apr 06 05:41:12 MDT 2000: idReport: problem in calcStripeParams, setting many params to NaN: Syntax Error: expected floating-point positional parameter for "" but got "NaN"\nUSAGE: eqToGC -node -inclination -help im> tb Syntax Error: expected floating-point positional parameter for "" but got "NaN" USAGE: eqToGC -node -inclination -help while executing "eqToGC $ra $dec -node $gcNode -inclination $gcInc" invoked from within "set gcCoords [eqToGC $ra $dec -node $gcNode -inclination $gcInc]..." invoked from within "if {[catch {keylget limits lambdaMin}] != 1 } { set lambdaMin [keylget limits lambdaMin] set lambdaMax [keylget limits lambdaMax] set eta [keylget ..."
