Subject: 51663 28Apr00 SDSS night log Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2000 06:28:59 -0600 (MDT) From: sjnk@apo.nmsu.edu (Scot Kleinman) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday April 28 2000 (MJD 51663) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Shift 1 Steph Snedden (APO) Shift 1 Scot Kleinman (APO) Shift 2 Atsuko Kleinman (APO) Shift 2 Bing Chen (JHU) PT Visitors: --------------------- Connie Rockosi (UC) Andy Connolly (UP) Larry Carey (UW) Scott Burles (UC) Dave Schlegel (PU) Jeff Pier (USNO) THE PLAN: ========= Spectroscopy unless weather improves enough to do imaging, in which case a 2 hour scan along stripe 1 where ever it is well placed in the sky. SYNOPSIS: ========= First half seeing poor, did plates 285 and 297. Second half seeing improved, but not imaging quality. We observed plates 307 and 315. We declared 297, 307, and 315 done. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== TPM manual logging was required. Apparently the daemon for it is not working properly. Changed set point for HVAC system from 42 to 52 degrees. gotoField -gflat didn't close the flat field screens and complained that it didn't think we were slewing ( or tracking ) even when the move was done. However the second time we tried it, it worked. Things went smoothly despite poor seeing. Plate 285 was done with 4 science exposures in 2.5 to 3.5 arcsecond seeing. Plate 297 was done with 6 science exposures in 2.7 to 4.0 arcsecond seeing. One thing we found out tonight is not to use the pauseGuider -all command. There is no command to unpause it, and startGuider or even stopGuider and startGuider do not restart it. The best way to clear it is to issue the following commands in the SOP window. set guiderInfo(pause_xy) 0 set guiderInfo(pause_phi) 0 set guiderInfo(pause_scale) 0 During the setup for plate 309 (and the changeover from shift 1 to shift 2), we could not get grabInst to work in a new SOP session even after the old SOPers dropped connections and we logged out the port. After numerous attempts, it worked- who knows why? Also, during starPattern, we saw double images some of the time. We've seen this once before this run, but it's not a regular thing. Note, we took two arc calibs each time with the command [pre|post]Calib 1 2 to work around the warmup problem for the Cd lamps. Good idea longScott. Finally, we did a cartridge again for which we already had guider angles (cartridge 6) and we did not to a starPattern. Guiding worked beautifully! Good job Spectroites! During closing, the telescope would not go back up to 30deg once we got the building on. It went to about 6:25 or so, then stopped. We fixed it by pushing on some flat field screen petals, although the interlocks display showed many red things (the flat field petals being some of them). We replaced the imager dewar ~06:00 and during the traditional dewar schlepping, one fell down the stairs. We picked it up, but left it there for Paul Bunyan to bring back up. endNight -doSpectro ran successfully and we rejoiced.
