Humidity climbed to over 40%. Dust counts rose to the closure limit at 03:00. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We made the decision to do spectroscopy when the wind shifted out of the east at sunset. We felt there was little chance the seeing would be good enough for imaging, and we were right. We started with cartridge 7/plate 284. We had to go to an FK5 star first before we were able to acquire the field. The offsets needed to get the field are recorded in the spectroscopy section. The seeing was quite bad, making getting fiber angles difficult. Two sets of "before science" angles are recorded for cartridge 7. We could not get values for all fibers. We did a set of 4 science exposures for this plate. It was then decided after talking with Andy that the seeing was not good enough to bother calculating fiber angles, so we stopped doing a post-science starPattern. Next, Cartridge 5, plate 298 was mounted. 4 science exposures were made. Seeing was somewhat better...around 2 arcsec FWHM on the guide fibers. The first exposure, however, most likely is missing some photons due to an error in getting the fiber angles. The rest should have higher S/N. There are no guider images at all for the starPattern, so it must not have been done. Fortunately for the last three images, the guider seemed to keep the stars down the fibers pretty well with what values it had. The last cartridge we had time for was cartridge 9, plate 308. Four exposures were taken. Seeing improved to between 1.5 and 2 arcsec FWHM at the guide fibers, although DIMM was reporting higher values. Because of the better seeing, we decided to do a post-science starPattern for this cartridge (values below). We did not get an angle for fiber 4. The dust went over the closure limit as we were finishing our final calibrations. We closed. We did endNight 51662 -doSpectro since Mamoru had generated some imager files while testing that would have made endNight -51662 longer to run (and Mamoru didn't want any of these runs archived). Overall, it was a relatively trouble-free night.
