THE PLAN: ========= Spectroscopy all night unless it becomes photometric with good seeing and the imager is cooled down. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== The first half of the night was spent taking spectroscopic data. Plates 260, 321, and 280 were observed. We switched to imaging and started stripe 9N, but did not get useful data as chip 33 was bad. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Imager is mounted. Cartridge 7 with the corrector on top is on the cart in the "dome" because I could find no place to put the corrector after removing it from the cartridge and the manipulator would not pick up both the cartridge and the corrector, although it used to. DIMM: ----- 1.3 to 1.5 arc-second fwhm INTERLOCKS: ----------- None bypassed. SOFTWARE USED: -------------- IOP/SOP: v3_10_1 Watcher: v2_6_1 MCP: v4_0_2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Variable cirrus until 20:30. Clear after that. Winds westerly 10 -20 MPH. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== The imager was on the telescope and being pumped down until about 16:30. It was turned on and cooling started. Once it was clear it was cooling properly it was taken off the telescope around 17:00. Note, it reached operational temperature in only 5 hours... it was within spec by 22:00. The spectro corrector and the first cartridge ( 3, 260 ) of the night were then put on the telescope and the rest of the checkout was completed by 18:30. This included relaxing the primary. To get the guider to talk we had to stop and restart telrun. Apparently the guider Mac was also a victim of yesterday's power outage and communications between it and the TCC were hung. We lost some time when a sop window crashed during setup on our first plate. It was related to an interlocks window which hung and had been started from the same window sop was running in. See PR 889. Things went smoothly after that. We got two science exposures on plate 260, and then went to cartridge 5 plate 321. The time between slewing to instrument change and slewing to the target was only 9 minutes, and we were taking science exposures in another 15 minutes. Several trios of exposures were taken of the bright M67 plate varying from 30 to 240 seconds. There were some instances in which the commands to the flatfield screens and calib lamps were ignored or acted on incorrectly. On one occasion the Ne lamps didn't come on when requested. In another case the Ne lamps didn't turn off when requested, and instead the flatfield screen opened when no command to do so was issued. It was as if the command to turn off the Ne lamps opened the flatfield screen. See PR 890. Starting around 20:30 imager biases were taken. As soon as the first run started the watcher complained with a critical error that the imager exec micro was unacknowledged. Suspicious that this might have been some stale error only brought to the fore by beginning a drift, I cleared the error. It returned in the watcher but not as a critical error. I decided to end the drift and do an iack. The error did not return after this. At around 23:20 we put cartridge 7 plate 280 on. Setup went smoothly. We declared it done at 01:30 after 60 minutes of exposure time, diamondPoints and a postCalib. Andy wanted some out of focus tests with the guider which we did next. We switched to the imager (good sky and reasonable seeing) next. By 02:15, we were setting the focus on the imager in stripe 10 N starting at lambda=0, to leave ~ an hour setup before getting to the start position of lambda=15. This was run 1249. The comments asked for by goDrift contain an error - I entered stripe 10 instead of 9. This was corrected during the endDrift questions. Frame 38 has an lskip, findRotator reported +0.001 +- 0.009 rotation error. Chip 33 appeared blue on the monitors, and was reporting a 0 value for nQuartileL as indicated by the watcher. We were, however, getting fwhm and other values for this chip. We grabbed a frame from it and the right half of the image looked OK, but the left half looked was reading all zeros. We ended the drift and did a new iack to see if that cleared the problem. It didn't. We then pulled an image over from the previous bias run and saw the same problem. We woke up Connie by phone and looked at the voltages and other status items and could not find anything wrong. We saved an image she requested in /data/photo/chip33.fits. We also cycled the power on the camera and it came back with the left half of chip 33 reading some bias now, but the "bias" values slowly declined and became 0 by frame 78 of this new bias run, 1251. We also opened up the camera shutters (cc openall; cc closeall to close them) and got star trails in the right half of chip 33, but none in the left half. This is also consistent with our previous analysis which could not see any cosmic ray hits in the left half of the chip. We closed around 5:10, being twilight and a bad chip 33. We continued the biases and found by frame 78 (run 1251) the left-half "bias" had dropped to zero. There is a rather steep decline from around frame 72 to 78. We ran endNight 51612 -dpSpectro -doTpm and there was great rejoicing.... It seemed to be related to an interlocks window started from it which had stopped updating( v2_6_4 ). The interlocks panel showed only colors. No text was printed over the colored blocks as is usual. It took a while to recover from this, as we had to log out all the spectro ports which had been locked with grabInstruments, as well as kill the tccuser connection it had left hanging. We also lost the guider flat used in the setup ( the window died during a preCalib ), and we didn't realize that sop didn't know the guider frame number until we saw starPattern fail. I think we should avoid running an interlocks window from the same window one is running sop. DATA LOGS FROM IOP/SOP: =======================
