Subject: 51615 11/12Mar00 SDSS Log Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 06:34:44 -0700 (MST) From: sjnk@apo.nmsu.edu (Scot Kleinman) SATURDAY MARCH 11, 2000 APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG (MJD 51615) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Ellyne Kinney 1st (APO) Jeffrey Hayes 1st (APO) Scot Kleinman 2nd (APO) Atsuko Kleinman 2nd (APO) Eric Neilsen -- PT (JHU) Visitors: John Peoples (FNAL) Jim Gunn (phone) Mike Carr (phone) Ron Rechenmacher (phone) THE PLAN: ========= We are charged to perform spectroscopy for the first half on the night, and if the weather improves, change over to imaging. Should the weather not improve, we continue with spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Cirrus and variable seeing most of the night. Lots of problems. Some good seeing during spectroscopy, plate 303 finished and plate 323 got 4x900s exposures instead of the desired 3x600s. Attempt to get one exposure on plate 310 failed because the frame read out improperly. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= In building with cart 1, plate 310 mounted. DIMM: ----- 1.9 arc-second fwhm at 22:30 as good as 1" later, as bad as 3-4" as well. INTERLOCKS: ----------- None bypassed. SOFTWARE USED: -------------- IOP/SOP: v3_10_3 Watcher: v2_7_0 MCP: NOCVS 11MAR2000_1529 (for testing tonight) MCP: v4_0_2 reverted at 18:50 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= At 16:00 -- cirrus, with heavier cloud coming on from the W. At 19:00 -- clearer w/ cirrus. rest of night -- ditto. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We finished off the opening check list by 17:00. We started the night by putting plate 3/cartridge 260 on so that we would get on the sky with speed and alacrity. Our plans did not go through as we had a spontaneous reboot of the MCP at about 18:40. This occurred while we were moving the telescope in ALT down to 6 d. We reverted to MCP V4_0_2, and all was then well. We reset the fiducials and were then ready to go. At this point we found that the power to CCD 02 was down -- we checked the power supplies on SP2 and found that they reported okay. We then called on Mike Carr's assistance (Connie being out when we called.). See the SP2 power problems below. Ellyne rebooted the Spectro crate at 20:10. We called JEG to inquire about the next best step and his comment was to pull the plug on the power supplies. With Mike Carr's assistance, we found the appropriate cable and power cycled the power supplies on sp2. This fixed the voltage problems but not the VME problems. Ellyne then called Ron Rechenmacher who advised that we not do a "initNight -poolInit", but just an "initNight" as there is a problem when one tried to initialize the pool disks as they currently stand. Ron is to be called any time the spectro crate is to be rebooted so he can further diagnose this problem. We put cartridge 5/plate 266 on at 21:00 and were on the sky and guiding by 22:30. We had problems getting sp1 to talk again, but we logged into the Xyplex and logged out the hung process. We then successfully started a science integration, but by the time we finished this first one, we had to change cartridges again(!). At 23:00, we changed to cartridge 7/plate 282. We got no science exposures on it, though. As we were about ready to start, the guider stopped functioning- we still got images, but there was none of the usual accompaniments to the images (FWHM, efficiency, etc.) and no text was being printed in the sop window now telescope movement corrections made. We checked a few things before deciding to telstop and telrun the TCC. This worked, but meant, of course, we had to re-acquire the field. We did that, but could never get all the guide stars very well centered. In particular, guider stars #s 1,2,&5 didn't look good. This could be because we were at the end of the drill time window, or perhaps something else was wrong. The guider was asking for a 0.010 scale correction which we provided, but still had no luck getting all the stars centered. We then decided to abort this plate (as I said, its window had passed) and start the next one. Cart 4, plate 323 loaded and acquired fine. We finally started a good science exposure. We were getting about 1.2" seeing! (But the sky was not photometric, hence no switch to imaging.) Later we saw Andy's email requesting only 3x600s exposures instead of the 4x900s we did. I hope we didn't saturate and that our exposures are OK. The sp2 sensor cable was unplugged for these (and subsequent) exposures (and plugged back in at the end of the night). Is there a final word yet on whether or not we need to continue to unplug this and or sp1's cable(s)? Off to cart 8, plate 303 which was finished successfully then onto cart 1, plate 311 for the last two exposures. Well, no time for two, but if we're lucky, we can sneak in one before twilight. Weee! We started the exposure at 04:44, 15 minutes before twilight. It completed in time, but did not read out properly (looks like the same problem as a few nights ago, so despite our best efforts, we added no new exposures to this plate (see problems below). We closed up a little after 5am, disappointed. After moving the telescope to 6deg to put the building on and before trying to bring it back up, the MCP hung and had to be rebooted before we could do anything. Also, tonight and last night, the mcpMenu aborted our move to 6deg before the readout actually said 6deg (although the clinometer said less than 6deg) and put the brakes on. I don't quite understand why it is doing that. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm finished successfully.
