Science after that with the imager as weather permits, else spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== It was cloudy for most of the night. Winds picked up past closure conditions at 02:00 and remained high for the rest of the night. We were never able to open. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= The imager is mounted with counterweights at 710V. The telescope was left at an altitude of 30 deg. The Lindy cart with cartridge 4 plus corrector is in the enclosure. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed. SOFTWARE USED: ============== We cut a new version of iop and watcher due to MCP dependencies which changed in the lastest MCP version. IOP: v3_8_8 Watcher: v2_6_4 MCP: v4_0_0 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Cloudy with a slight threat of precipitation until 03:00, then variably cloudy. Winds picked up to past closure limits at 02:00 and remained high for the rest of the night. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Connie finished fixing the MCP t-bar status problem during the day. The MCP now reports the correct latch status. The dry N2 (boiloff) plumbing has been hooked up to the imager 180-l dewar. Thanks, Connie. There is now a quick disconnect for the N2 line at the doghouse. So now to swap out that dewar, you must release the quick disconnect, and close both the liquid and vent valves on the dewar. Then remove the dry N2 line and the LN2 supply line from the dewar. We will need to check the N2 bottle and pressures at the gauges on the doghouse as part of the pre-flight checkout. See Connie's email to sdss-apodaylog. We started the night with the imager in the doghouse and spectro cartridge 4/plate 268 on the telescope. The imager was installed at 04:00. The Lindy cart with cartridge 4 and corrector was left in the enclosure. While making the instrument change we saw that the umbilical had been pinched. The supply lines appear to be okay, but we must be very careful that the umbilical is on the J hook when stowing the imager. The umbilical collar at the instrument end was also loose. Connie snugged it down. Clouds and high winds prevented opening at all tonight. While waiting for the weather to clear, we ran an imager bias scan. While setting up the archiver, id 2-1 said it needed cleaning, but the problem was most likely a bad tape (see problem 3). A box for suspect tapes was put in the cabinet in the computer room. It is our intention at this point to ship suspect tapes to FNAL when several accumulate in the box. We also took some spectro darks looking for the notorious light leak on r1. Jon B. had taped the LED that is believed to be responsible, but it is difficult to reach, and there was concern that it might still be a light source. It appears to be. There was clearly a difference when the power to the LEDs was disconnected. We will have to do spectroscopy with the power to the LED cut off until a permanent solution is implemented. David S. sent a message to sdss-obs about this. DATA ACQUISITION (see IOP/SOP output below): =========================================== IMAGING: -------- Imager bias run 1224 300 frames. These data will not be shipped. They are in /data/photo/51605 for the moment. SPECTROSCOPY: ------------- Spectro darks and biases (taken while looking at the LED light leak) are in /data/spectro/51605. EndNight -copy was run at the end of the night. The tapes were left in the drives. Both were refilled at 06:15. The imager dewar was somewhat less than half full at 06:15, and was not replaced. The day staff will have to keep an eye on it. PROBLEMS: ========= 1)The day staff left the Az brake air hose unplugged. We found it (with Larry's help) and plugged it back in. 2) The tcc showed the following errors until we did a telstop and telrun, after which everything seemed to work fine. $ telrun 0 1 I YourUserNum=1 0 1 : UserNum=1; UserAdded axis stop 0 0 F Modu="tgm_ReadWrite"; Text="data block not written" 0 0 F Modu="tgm_ReadWrite"; Text="failed to access block 'blk_Inst' ID 7 with mo de 1" 0 0 ! We put in a new tape and eventually (it took a while) the cleaning light went off and we were able to mount the tape and archive bias data with no problems.
