Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 07:59:24 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: obslog 000209 (MJD 51584) WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2000 APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG (MJD 51584) Observing team: Ellyne Kinney (APO) -- first shift Scot Kleinman (APO) -- second shift Atsuko Kleiman (APO) -- second shift Dan Long (APO) -- third shift Bing Chen (JHU) -- PT Visitors: Peregrine McGehee (LANL) Jon Loveday (UC) Steve Kent (FNAL) Plan for tonight: Imaging with Off-Equatorial scanning and 3 scans of a FASTT field if photometric. Otherwise spectroscopy -- especially a high airmass FASTT field. Pointing model status: We (Scot) attempted to improve on Steph's reduction of the pointing model data taken last night, but were unable to improve on the 1.7" RMS she obtained. We tried a various fitting parameters and tried removing a few outliers without improvement. In the end we loaded Steph's original fit. Imaging Runs: ------------- 1130: Bias run 1131: Bias run 1132: Engineering, Focus adjustment and rotator tweaking. 1133: Off-Equator scanning, stripe 36, lambda=-57 for about 45 min. We were able to run sky gang, but it shows were are possibly off in RA by 6 minutes. Spectroscopy: ------------- At 21:30 we decided to switch to spectroscopy due to non-photometric conditions. We dismounted the imager and mounted cartridge 1. We were back on the air by 22:20. Cartridge 1, Plate 316: MCP crashed upon exit from Menu and logout. Would not respond to soft reboot. Hard reboot worked, but we then could not set the fiducials. We kept getting a message like "impossible value of fidix" The azumith was set, but the altitude stopped responding to any crossing below 56 deg. The rotator had a fiducial value of 141 as the last crossed. It was at about the time the rotator should have crossed a fiducial that all axes stopped responding to fiducial crossings. After several attempts to get the fiducials to show up, we did a soft reboot of the MCP. We then reset the azimuth and altitude fiducials before moving the rotator. The rotator never registered a crossing, in several attempts ( PR 813 ). Took 3 exposures and diamond pattern. Cartridge 3, Plate 283: Cartridge on at 02:00. No MCP problems this time. A guide wheel from the cart came off ( front-most on right front wheel ). We put it back on, but I am not sure if I got it tightened down properly. We found an annoying problem with the SOP command guiderFocus (PRs 808, 809). If you happen to get the order of arguments wrong ( say 50 steps of 4 microns, instead of 4 steps of 50 ), you can't stop the sequence. Ctrl-c doesn't stop it, you just get the quitting... response, then it goes on and takes another exposure. A better way of setting up this command would be to simply type guiderFocus and have it come up with default values for the parameters which the operator could change if desired. I see the way one interacts with goDrift as a template here. Of course it would also help if Ctrl-c actually stopped the operation. Also we have yet to see anything but all zeros from the focus sweep results even though fibers 10 and 11 show fwhm numbers. Took 4 science exposures ( 2376 - 2379 ) and diamond pattern, plus cals. Cartridge 5, Plate 295: Cartridge on at 04:45. It took a while to acquire guide stars. In fact I had to go to an FK5 star to get centered up. I noticed that I had to nearly clear the values in the calib offset to center up. Strangely, when I went back to the field, I had to put back nearly 15 arcseconds of azimuth offset to get the guide stars. This would seem to indicate a problem with the field coordinates rather than telescope pointing since the FK5 star was within 5 arcseconds of the nominal pointing position. We got guiding with enough time for one science exposure before it got too bright. Unfortunately the DA had other ideas. When I tried to start the exposure, I got the reply that on node sd1, daqBusy was 1 not 0, and that goStare had failed ( PR 811 ). The watcher showed it to be 0. Not sure of how to proceed, I went for a reboot of the spectro crate in hopes that would clear things up quickly and allow time for one science exposure. When sd1 came back up, the error changed when I issued a goStare. It now came back with mechstat: error writing "file9": Broken pipe At this point it was too late to get a science exposure, so we decided to stop. The guider images from the spectro plates tonight all showed fwhm in focus of between 3.5 and 4.0 arcseconds. This is much worse than with the imager earlier in the night, and the 3.5m and DIMM showed seeing remaining relatively constant between 1.0 and 1.6 arcseconds throughout the night. I couldn't log into sdssdp3 to scp them by hand. Spectro dewars were filled around 19:15, and again after the telescope was put away at 06:30. The imager dewar was still half full at sunrise, so was not changed. The telescope currently has cartridge 5 plate 295 mounted. WEATHER Skies tonight were mostly clear tonight. The temperature was in the upper 30s. Winds were westerly at 10 to 20 MPH, humidity was around 30%, and dust counts were around 500. Seeing tonight was between 1.0 and 1.7 arcseconds on DIMM.
