IMAGING: Run 1114: Focus and rotator tweaking. We then slewed the telescope to the Equator Meridian and set the rotator angle for a parked drift scan: (Az: 0, Alt: 57.22 and Rot:89.837) We then started the scan. We set the focus to -1400 and then ran findRotator and adjusted it position by +.02 degrees. Run 1115: Check collimation. We homed the primary, slewed to 0,87 degrees in mount coords, and then relaxed the primary. We tracked back to the equator merdian. During the slew Peregrine noticed that the MIG readings for the Primary changed slightly during the slew. We went back to 87 degrees Altitude and re-relaxed the primary just to make sure it was where we expected it to be. Primary MIG values were: A: 19324 B: 5559 C: 5569 Transverse: 4159 We tracked back to 0,57 degrees in mount coords. We calculated the current X/Y tilt and X/Y trans values for 57 degrees for the secondary. These were X tilt: 5.0, Y tilt: -5.0, X trans: 50.0, Y trans: -54.9. We checked the primary tilt, but setting the focus out +/- 300 using the setmir utility. We changed the Primary X tilt to 5.0 and the Y tilt to -5.0. We then calculated new tranlation and tilt values for the primary using the following equations: dx = -ty0 * 42.7 = 213.5 dy = tx0 * 42.5 = 213.5 tx = -dy0 * 0.0183 = -3.9 ty = dx0 * 0.0183 = 3.9 We set the primary to these new values using setmir and then relaxed the primary again. These values were also updated in the TCC file TINST:DEFAULT.DAT and reread the instrument block. The new Primary mirror MIG values are: A: 19314 B: 5569 C: 5569 Tranverse: 4074 We restared collimate and then did a focus sweep. Data for the focus sweep were saved in /data/photo/07feb2000. Here are the focus values vs frame number: Focus offset Focus value Frame Number ------------ ----------- ------------ -300 -1875 111 -100 -1675 115 -50 -1625 117 0 -1575 119 50 -1525 121 100 -1475 123 300 -1275 126 Run 1117: We did a backwards scan and did a focus scan. The backwards scan was setup with the TCC command 'track 95.3, 0 fk5 /rotang=0 /rottype=obj /scanvel=(-.0041707,0)' We tried a findRotator and found that the roator was off by .01 and decided not to update the rotator angle. Data for the focus sweep were saved in /data/photo/07feb2000. Here are the focus values vs. frame number: Focus offset Focus value Frame Number ------------ ----------- ------------ 0 -1600 41 -300 -1900 47 -100 -1700 55 -50 -1650 58 0 -1600 61 50 -1550 64 100 -1500 67 300 -1200 70 Run 1118: Powered Eq. Scan - Stripe 10,S about 60 frames. IOP focus loop running. Run 1119: Off-Eq Scan - Stripe 36 N lambda= -30. Focus loop running. Run 1120: Off-Eq Scan - Stripe 36 N lambda=0. Focus loop running. Run 1121: Stripe 10,S. Engineering scan to set rotator, etc. Run 1122: Stripe 10,S. This scan started with 1" seeing, then deteriorated to more than 2". We decided to go back to the equator to check seeing and focus. Focus loop running. Run 1123: On-equator scan to check focus and seeing. The rotator did not need adjusting, and focus was tweaked a bit. At this time we noted DIMM was reporting horrible seeing...4"...so we decided to stop here. SPECTROSCOPY: At 03:00 we removed and stowed the imager and mounted spectro cartridge 2 - plate 256. This cartridge had fibers unplugged and foam over the plate. This is to be a check of light leaks. Two 15 minute exposures were taken. At 04:30 Cartridge 5, plate 295 was installed. After some time, the field was acquired and guiding started. Just like last night, we started the science exposures in morning twilight. The first exposure is probably fine...sky counts were low. We took a second exposure, but it may not be useful. Pre and post calibrations were taken, as well as a set of binned diamond pointing offsets (before the postCalib). The diamond pattern is of dubious value, as it was taken well into twilight and is saturated, but it was useful as an educational exercise. Problems: Movable counterweight 2 has problems! While setting the counterweights for spectroscopy (to 300), CW2 suddenly dropped about half an inch. Eventually it made it to it's destination, but may have been slipping. We will not move this counterweight again until it has been looked at. (PR counterweights/792). No interlocks were bypassed. LN2: The spectrograph dewars were filled at 00:30 and again at 07:30. The imager dewar was swapped out at 07:45. Weather: Skies were clear to partly cloudy. Seeing was highly variable...1 arcsec to 4 arcsec through the night. Winds shifted from the west to the north at 18:00. Wind speeds were about 10 mph most of the night, occasionally going as high as 20 mph. Dust counts varied from 20-45 particles/ft^3. Relative humidity went from 30%-15%.
