Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2000 09:22:28 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 000203 (MJD 51578) THURSDAY FEBRUARY 3, 2000 APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5m OBSERVING LOG Observering team: Jeff Hayes (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) Atsuko Kleinman (APO) Dan Long (APO) Eric Neilsen (JHU) Visitors: Connie Rockosi (UC) Scott Burles (UC) Andrew Connolly (UP) David Schlegel (PU) Adrian Pope (CMU) David Johnston (UC) Mark Subbarao (UC) Plan: Spectroscopy all night long. At the beginning of the night, we moved the telescope to Alt ~ 6:00:00 but stopped it (by accident) with a Menu brake (b) command before it actually reached 6 deg. (It was around 6:41). After that, we could not move the telescope with MCP. The Menu reported a "bad amp" error and we were unable to get the axis happy to move. We then noticed that the watcher (running on commish - an rhl version of the watcher) showed that the "15 degree stop" was in the "neither" position. We used the manual hand-paddle to move the telescope to above (and later back below) ~15 degrees. The 15 deg. stop behaved normally, but the watcher display still showed its status as "neither". At this point, we decided to go back to the MCP version from last night. We then tried reproducing the same problem with the old MCP, but we could not reproduce it. We then noticed the watcher reflecting the proper state of the 15deg stop. However, this was a current watcher running on 'host. The 'commish watcher, though, still reported the "neither" status. We then went back to the new mcp v3_02Feb2000 to see if the problem returned, but we could not reproduce the problem. We kept the new version of the MCP, and since the two different watchers reported differne things for the 15deg stop, we cannot be sure that was really part of the problem or not. We talked to Robert who is to look into this tomorrow morning. We could not log TPM data since the TPM would bail out when trying to start a new log. This worked last night.... The details of the TPM death are at the end of the log. We also got the same MIG error messages as last night. A PR on both problems were filed on the GNATs database (PR#tpm/766). Note, the primary MIGs are currently plugged into t-g-sdss-2:2400 rather than the tpm ( they couldn't be read that way either ). Rebooting the MIGs didn't help. The spectro team reports successful manipulation of the flat field screens and lamps with their latest version of sop (and the new MCP version we are now running). Well, not exactly, actually. The flat field petals seem to open, but they hose the TCC in the process. They submitted a PR on it. At the start of the night, we were in the situation of having initNight run with the second set of last night's tapes still in the drives. Later on, the tapes were removed and a new set put in. archMount was issued and we began taking bias data. A short time later it was noticed that the tape labels were still those of last night. This is not supposed to happen. From what I understand, archMount is supposed to get the labels of the tapes in the drives. However, if you first issue an archUnload to the drives, and archLoad when the new tapes go in ( rather than just pushing the unload button on the drives ), archMount does read the labels rather than returning immediately with "already mounted". There was trouble with ID5 tonight. The cleaning light came on after the tapes were loaded, but it was not noticed. When archiving was started ID5-1 stopped working and no amount of cajoling could get it going again. What follows is the list of things I tried. When ID5 complained it wasn't working, I went into the computer room to check and that was when I noticed the cleaning light. I issued an archPause for ID5 and unloaded the tapes. I then ran the cleaning tape, put the tapes back in and did an archMount. It would come back immediately saying the tapes were already mounted, however an archResume would not do anything. The next thing I tried was unloading the tapes and doing an archInit. This changed the state to Initializing then Ready to Archive. I then put the tapes back in. They would go through the normal loading procedure, then the compression lights would go out, the tapes would rewind and unload. During all this I noticed that I would get impossible status entries for archDrvSts and archState. ( things like "unloading tape" followed by "positioning for append" ). After several tries, without success, the Photo 2 crate was rebooted, tapes were loaded and mounted, and archiving was resumed. Note that one can use endNight -frameCheck to re-queue the unarchived frames. In at attempt to clear up almost certain confusion, here are the tape labels for last night's and tonight's tapes which are to be shipped to Fermilab. Tonight the SOP guider ran on all 11 fibers and they looked nicely centered as well. the new optics make for a much more even light distribution. What follows are some notes from Andy Connolly on what was done. Plate 213 cart 3 was first pointing errors ~3" pre calib and post calib operations M67 plate ( 318 ) was next cart 4 No data due to clouds While cloudy: Warmup times for Ne and HgCd and Quartz were determined. Scattered light tests were done on the spectrographs. Some holes in both red camera casing and blue 2. See PR 768 & 769 and David Schegel's email ( sp-commish 178 ) for details. Plate 296 cart 5 pre calib 3 900 s exposure post calib ended with set of sparse fiber flats. EndNight completed at least to the point of scpPPD. I lost my sdsshost connection sometime shortly after that, so I don't know if it finished. Since there were no spectro summaries to mail to Princeton, I don't think there was anything left anyway. Spectro dewars were filled around 21:00, and again after the telescope was put away at 06:45. The imager dewar was replaced at 07:00, some 39 hours after the last one! WEATHER Skies tonight were clear or mostly clear except for a stretch of mostly cloudy between about midnight and 02:00. The temperature was in the mid 30s. Winds were generally westerly at 5 to 10 MPH, humidity was around 20%, and dust counts were around 20( the lowest I've ever seen ). Seeing tonight was between 1.5 and 3.0 arcseconds on DIMM, staying closer to 3.0 after midnight.
