Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 02:46:00 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: obslog 000216 (MJD 51591) WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2000 APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG (MJD 51591) Observing team: Dan Long (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) Atsuko Kleiman (APO) Brian Laubscher -- PT (LANL) Visitors: Alan Uomoto (JHU) Plan for tonight: Observer training. In particular, practice with the imager was requested by Scot and Atsuko. The telescope was not opened tonight due to clouds. We practiced mounting the imager ( and in the process dismounting the cartridge and corrector ). Note: We had trouble dismounting the cartridge and corrector. During the lowering process the cartrdige hung up about an inch from the latches. The problem was traced to cables which had been disconnected from the slithead latch and slithead door controller. This is really bad. We essentially had suspended the majority of the weight of the cartridge and corrector on the slithead latch pins. The cartridge was re-latched and the slithead latches disengaged. No damage was noticed on either the latches or the slitheads of cartridge 5. If people are going to do unusual things to the telescope, they should post what they're doing to sdss-obs or the log mailing list so we know what to look out for if it's forgotten to be put back. Also the MCP never complained that the command to disengage the latches didn't complete properly ( at least not that was obvious in the Menu ). We got a tbar latch failure error from the watcher tonight ( PR 845 ). It happened while we were mounting the imager. An imstat was issued and showed that the tbars were unlatched and the pressure was 50 PSI relative to vacuum. We made a call to Jim Gunn and convinced ourselves everything was OK. Since the error was not chronic, it was probably due to a timeout before checking the state of the latches not being long enough. It was likely asked for its state while in transition between latched and unlatched, thus triggering the error. We had a little trouble getting the archiver going tonight. When we started the archiver this evening, initNight -tapeLoad failed. Below is an excerpt from the murmur log. It seems that one of the dLoad tasks failed to spawn due to a memory error ( PR 846 ). We rebooted all crates at this point and started over. When everything came back up we tried an initNight -tapeLoad again and it failed because id6 was not initialized. An archInit to id6 worked. tapeLoad then succeeded. Imaging Runs: ------------- 1158: short bias run 1159: long bias run ( ~260 frames ). Spectroscopy: ------------- None tonight. ( PR 847 ) There appears to be a discrepancy between what endNight wants out of the idReport files and what is being written there by v3_8_5 of iop. More details are at the end of the log. Everything was left alone in hopes that the error could be repeated and traced during the day. All tapes are still in the drives. STATUS Software: sop v3_8_5 watcher v2_6_1 iop v3_8_5 mcp v3_1_1 No interlocks were/are bypassed tonight. Spectro dewars were filled around 20:30, and again at 01:30. The imager dewar was replaced at 19:45 when it was noticed the pressure in dewar was below 5 PSI. The replacement dewar exhibited no such pressure drop. The telescope currently has the imager mounted, CW setting 720. WEATHER Skies tonight were mostly clear at the start of the night and clouded up shortly before 20:00. It drizzled a bit around 22:00. The temperature was in the low 40s. Winds were out of the south at 15 to 30 MPH, humidity was around 50%, and dust counts were around 400.
