Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2000 03:33:09 -0700 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5-meter Obs Log (MJD 51590) TUESDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2000 (MJD 51590) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5m OBSERVING LOG Observers: Dan Long (APO) Steph Snedden (APO) Brian Laubscher -- PT (LANL) Craig Loomis (APO) Visitors: Alan Uomoto (JHU) The plan for tonight is to get some imaging practice. Also, we will run endNight on any and all imaging data for the pipeline folks. We also will look for any archiver problems. We started late this evening. French worked on the flat field screens in the late afternoon and early evening. Carlos had made some changes to the screens and PLC code had to be updated. French also replaced the main fuse to the flat field petals with a slo-blow fuse. The flat field screen is working well now. We had problems with sdsshost while starting IOP. See note 1 in the "problems" section. We worked on these probles from about 19:30-20:30. IMAGING: Once problems with 'host were resolved, we started some biases at about 20:30. After taking biases, we then installed the imager. We took time for Dan to get values for his force-distance tables for the instrument change document and scripts. At 22:15, we started a scan on stripe 10, S, lamda=-60 (beginning of stripe). During the scans, we got error messages from id2 about wrong num of pix. See item 3 in the "problems" section. While focusing, Dan zeroed the focus offset in the instrument block. The imager focus values will now be somewhere near -200, not 1500. Seeing was marvellous (too bad there was moon). The largest FWHM was 1.3 on CCDs 32, 46 and 52. Thirteen CCDs reported subarcsec seeing, with CCD 24 and 43 reporting the lowest value of 0.82 arcsec. These values were recorded at 23:00. The FWHM values for all the CCDs and the wavelength adjusted FWHM values can be found at: http://www.apo.nmsu.edu/site/directory/dlong/Images/Good_Seeing.html Run summary: Run 1154 bias ~15 frames Run 1155 bias ~15 frames Run 1156 engineering ..lskip gave a rotator offset of -.028. This value was applied to an offset rot command. ~50 frames. Run 1157 engineering .. Ran for a while to see how archiver behaved. id2 gave "wrong num of pix error messages". ~150 frames. Seeing 0.82-1.3 arcsec. We then ran endNight, with several problems. See item 4 in the problems section. We closed at 01:00. ******************** PROBLEMS: (PRs filed for each problem) 1) While starting IOP, the imager server died, but not the spectro server. I tried to restart it. It would start up, then the imager server window would disappear. I quit and tried to restart IOP and got: astroda OAC version v14_11 Using HVE link to ICC Error mapping shared data area (memory) mmap failed for /dev/mmem for offset 0xB8000000 (0x00100000 bytes) ******************************************************************************** * * * Backplane communications with the ICC are not possible. * * * * o Check connections between the machines. * * o Reboot (reset) the ICC. * * o Restart this (OAC) program. * * * ******************************************************************************** Then 'host died. Craig rebooted sdsshost, and we unloaded the tapes and rebooted both photo crates, as well as the astrom and spectro crate. IOP was restarted, initNight completed normally, and we could begin taking and archiving biases on all nodes. 2) The alignment clamp is not doing its job very well. The rails were offset by about 1/8 inch with the clamp on. We manually aligned the rails tonight, and set the azimuth brake for imager installation. 3) id2 reported wrong num of pix several times. The other nodes reported no errors. Here are the messages, grep'ed from the murmur log: dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (ccd endNight 51590 -copy endNight copy: Error: no files matched glob pattern "/skycat/oplogs/51590/*" im> endNight 51590 -mailSum endNight mail imager run summaries: struct IDCOMMENT - length mismatch between typedef and input Error: Trouble in param2Chain with args=/astrolog/51590/idReport-51590.par hdr ******************** Mirror Numbers: Temperature: 6.9C Altitude: 56.71 PRIMARY: MIGS: A=1.9314, B=0.5569, C=.5575, D=0.4079, E=1.8979, F=0.3984 prim stat (galils) 000004850, -000002350, 000000100, -000009500, 000000050, -000000100 commanded position 000004850, -000002350, 000000100, -000009500, 000000050, -000000100 actual position setmir numbers: =0.00, -3.90, 3.90, 213.50, 213.50 SECONDARY: MIGS: A=0.4439, B=0.4719, C=0.4689, D=0.0139 focus: -255.10 sec stat (galils) -000615700, -000628600, -000638850, -000000700, -000005500 commanded position -000615822, -000628735, -000638795, -000000700, -000005500 actual position setmir numbers: Commanded: -497.28, 5.00, -5.00, 50.00, -53.00 Actual: -497.32, 4.95, -5.00, 50.01, -53.09 ******************* Telescope: The telescope was stowed at 30 deg. alt with the imager installed. Tapes: The following tapes were put on the shelf for shipping to FNAL: JL 1899 JL 1900 JL 1901 JL 1902 JL 1903 JL 1904 JL 1833 Fresh tapes were put in the tape drives. LN2: The spectrograph dewars were filled at 17:30 and again at 01:00. The imager dewar was replaced at 02:00. Software: IOP v3_8_4 was used. v3_8_3 was also tried when endNight problems were encountered, but v3_8_3 gave the same errors as the current version. Interlocks: No interlocks were bypassed. Weather: Skies were clear to mostly clear. Winds were from 5-10 mph out of the west, shifting to the south at about 21:00. Dust counts ranged from 15-28 particles/ftt^3. Relative Humidity wenr from about 20% down to 16%. DIMM seeing varied from 1 arcsec to almost 3 arcsec, staying at 1.5 arcsec or greater most of the night. This was in contrast to the subarcsec FWHMs we saw while driftscanning.
