Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 06:55:13 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: obslog 000210 (MJD 51585) THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2000 APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG (MJD 51585) Observing team: Jeff Hayes (APO) -- first shift Scot Kleinman (APO) -- second shift Atsuko Kleiman (APO) -- second shift Dan Long (APO) -- third shift Bing Chen (JHU) -- PT Visitors: Steve Kent (FNAL) Plan for tonight: Imaging if photometric. Otherwise spectroscopy -- especially a high airmass FASTT field. It was a bug-free night! Well, I suppose I could have filed a bug report on the weather:). Clouds were around until after 02:00. During that time light leak testing and linearity testing was done on the spectrographs. There was enough time at the end of the night when it cleared off to get plate 295 finally finished off. Endnight worked. Overall, weather not withstanding, a good night. During the afternoon, Hayes was involved with some planned emergency closing exercises with French and Carlos. It was discovered that if French couldn't move the telescope with a hand winch, then the observers don't have a chance. Deferred for more thought. French fixed the light over the outside manipulator -- turns out it was attached to the heater circuit, so that when the heater went off, so did the light. From about 16:00 on Robert had the MCP to try and figure out what exactly it is doing when it crosses a fiducial. He played with debugging the code until about 18:00. Before Robert left, he reverted to MCP V3_1_1. Jon Brinkman performed a series of light leak tests on the spectrographs from 17:30 until 22:20. His analysis and report will come separately. Once Jon was finished his tests we set the ficucials using MCP V3_1_1. We could not do this while Jon was obtaining his test data, as he needed a consistant position for them (i.e. at zenith). Clouds kept us from doing anything on the sky the first half of the night. We were in the middle of running some linearity tests on the spectrographs when it began to clear ( see end of log for list of exposures ). The telescope was finally opened around 03:30 and set up to do plate 295. The flat field screen power was found disconnected at the base of the windscreen upon opening and was reconnected. Used fk5 star to center up and focus ( 1575 ). Tonight unlike last night, the calib offsets for the FK5 star worked beautifully on the guide stars ( -.0035,0. ). Like last night, the fwhm was much worse for the guider than the other telescopes on the mountain ( 3.2" .vs. 1.0 - 2.0 ). With four science exposures under clear skies, I think we can consider plate 295 done and can go ahead and change it for 317 as Steve Kent recommended. Just so its all in one place, Steve also wants 256 replaced with 301. Spectro dewars were filled around 19:30, and again after the telescope was put away at 06:30. The imager dewar was replaced in the afternoon. The telescope currently has cartridge 5 plate 295 mounted. WEATHER Skies tonight were mostly cloudy until about 02:00. It became clear by 03:00 and stayed that way the rest of the night. The temperature was in the mid 30s. Winds were westerly at 10 to 20 MPH, humidity was around 30%, and dust counts were around 400. Seeing tonight was between 1.4 and 2.0 arcseconds on DIMM.
