SYNOPSIS: ========= Seeing tests, imager and DIMM. Fast binned scan on sky, and it worked! Various needstest PRs. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== The afternoon was spent installing the lastest versions of software. Small problem switching to v2_1_4 of the tpm. It (UPS) thought that the current version of the tpm was v2_1_1 ( which no longer exists on disk ), and complained when it couldn't unsetup that version. Setup seemed to work anyway. > setup tpm v2_1_4 ERROR: No instance matches were made between the version file (/p/upsdb/tpm/v2_1_1.version) and the table file (tpm.table) for flavor (IRIX+6) and qualifiers () ERROR: Possible UPS database (/p/upsdb) corruption in product 'tpm'. ERROR: Found no match for product 'tpm' ERROR: No instance found for product: 'tpm' WARNING: Unsetup of tpm failed, continuing with setup Attempted to tell the new version of the watcher/servers that the new disk it was to be watching was too full. A new button for it indeed appeared on the watcher ( sdsscommish:/data/astrolog ). However we could not get it to go red after issuing the set daData command given us to trigger the alarm. set daData(sdsscommish:/data/astrolog) "sdsscommish:/data/astrolog bad" A parray of the relevant terms yielded the following watch> parray daData *data* daData(/data/astro) = {mbytesAvail 7503.5} {percentFree 89} ok daData(/data/photo) = {mbytesAvail 6958.8} {percentFree 83} ok daData(/data/spectro) = {mbytesAvail 1234.7} {percentFree 20} bad daData(sdsscommish:/data/astrolog) = sdsscommish:/data/astrolog bad We tried making the command look more like the other partitions entries set daData(sdsscommish:/data/astrolog) "{} {} bad" It still didn't change the status. We didn't notice any idArchLog files or see any new files appear on /data/astrolog of commish ( even after sourcing a new camera.tcl Connie had checked in ). The first half of the night was spent taking imager data at various places on the sky concurrent with DIMM measurements of a nearby bright star. The preliminary result is that the 2.5m has fwhm measurements about half an arcsecond higher than that measured by DIMM. DIMM's measurements ranged from about .6 arcsec to 1.5 arcsec depending on position and time. The 2.5m ranged from about 1.1 to 2.0 arcseconds. At the start of the night the spread was .5 to .6 arcseconds between DIMM and the r'/i' chips of the imager. At that time there was greater than 2 degree C difference between portions of the primary. As the mirror reached thermal equilibrium ( temperatures within .8 C anyway ), the 2.5m got within .3 to .5 arcseconds of the DIMM reading. A more detailed analysis of tonight's data will be sent out once it is analyzed. The next step in these tests (tomorrow night) is to qualitatively look at the sources of bad seeing by monitoring video of out-of-focus donuts, while DIMM2 is monitoring seeing. A summary of the different runs follows: Run 1922 DIMM star Fomalhaut frames 12 - 14 are focus=400 donuts frames 20 - 22 are focus=-500 donuts seeing data starts at frame 55 Run 1923 DIMM star Deneb seeing data starts at frame 30 Run 1924 DIMM star Capella seeing data starts at frame 35 Run 1925 DIMM star Capella seeing data starts at frame 19 Run 1926 DIMM star Rigel seeing data starts at frame 25 When the seeing tests were finished, we tested the updated instChange command. It did send the rotator to -:18 when the -imager flag was issued and to 0 when no flag was issued. The spectrograph doors did open on the way to instChange. Unfortunately the altitude never got to 90. It hung up waiting for it to reach 70. It reached 70:00:00.4 before it could verify that it made 70, and it stayed there. A second instChange command did send it to 90. We need to increase the tolerance, if this command is to work reliably. Next was the long awaited and much anticipated on-sky fast binned scan test. The short summary is that we were able to get it to work, but not at the desired linestart period. When we started the scan at the requested velocity and linestart, the stars were long vertical streaks. We then changed the linestart period back to something closer to nominal, then slowly lowered it. The streaks kept getting smaller until by 15000 they were nearly gone ( an indication that 14811 is probably the correct value ). However, as soon as we tried a rate less than 15000, the stars became long streaks again. It seems as though the imager will not accept a linestart period less than 15000, and if you try, it sets it to some large value ( the default maybe? ). We changed the scanvelocity to .0275, which corresponds to a linestart of about 16000 ( 16050 seemed to produce the best images ). The imager had no trouble with this rate. We took an equatorial scan of about 140 frames using this rate ( except the first few frames ). It was run 1930. A getAllFrames was done for frame 100. It is in /data/photo/cmr/fast_bin. Here is the normal binning values for ccdRowLock for v3_21_0. im> iccExec [astroList] statusDump ccdRowLock NAME ACCESS TYPE VALUE LOW HIGH DESCRIPTION ------------------ ------------- ----- -------- -------- -------- ------------------------- ccdRowLock pub w cfg int 850 0 0 Drifting Only - Rows in 1st group of Fr 1 Status entries found NAME ACCESS TYPE VALUE LOW HIGH DESCRIPTION ------------------ ------------- ----- -------- -------- -------- ------------------------- ccdRowLock pub w cfg int 139 0 0 Drifting Only - Rows in 1st group of Fr 1 Status entries found NAME ACCESS TYPE VALUE LOW HIGH DESCRIPTION ------------------ ------------- ----- -------- -------- -------- ------------------------- ccdRowLock pub w cfg int 938 0 0 Drifting Only - Rows in 1st group of Fr 1 Status entries found NAME ACCESS TYPE VALUE LOW HIGH DESCRIPTION ------------------ ------------- ----- -------- -------- -------- ------------------------- ccdRowLock pub w cfg int 226 0 0 Drifting Only - Rows in 1st group of Fr 1 Status entries found A test of the spectrographs using both v3_19_1 and v3_21_0 showed the same values of ccdRowOscn and ccdRowVis for binned-by-4 and binned-by-1, so the code changes didn't affect spectro at all. 1x1 4x4 V3_19_1 ccdRowOscn 21 6 ccdRowVis 2048 512 V3_21_0 ccdRowOscn 21 6 ccdRowVis 2048 512 A quick check of the imager after rebooting the crates and resetting the camera for normal operation, showed all to be well. At the end of the night, we did a couple rotator fidcucial tests. All we did was to use the tcc to move the rotator without slewing ( rot # mount ) plus and minus 120 degrees from stow ( 0 ). In the positive direction, errors built up to something like +500 ticks by 90 degrees, then started dropping once past 90. In the negative direction, there was a similar pattern but of the opposite sign and greater magnitude. It exceeded -1000 around -90 degrees. It is somewhat puzzling how sinusoidal error between fiducial and encoder can happen when they are physically part of the same tape, but this may in part explain some of the large rotator errors noted in recent logs. EndNight completed successfully and the tapes are on the shelf, ready to go. While this wasn't science data, it was thought a good idea to send it to FNAL for safe keeping as it does contain useful engineering data on seeing and the first on-sky fast binned scan.
