Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2000 06:39:23 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20001206 (MJD 51885) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday December 6, 2000 (MJD 51885) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Eric Nielsen (FNAL) Anders Jorgensen (LANL) PT VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Spectroscopy, with just a dash of imaging at the end of the night. SYNOPSIS: ========= Lots of moon, variable seeing, some spectroscopy, no imaging. Plates done ( 416, 434, 440 ). Other plates with some observations ( 390, 414 ) Fiber angles calculated for Cartridge 1 GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We started out with plate 390. After 6 exposures it was obvious we could not finish the plate in any reasonable time so we moved on to plate 416. It was already more than half way done from a couple nights earlier, so we were hopeful we could get the remaining S/N needed tonight. The seeing was generally poor 2( 2 to 3 arcsec ), and we were pointed quite close to the moon. However in 6 exposures we were able to declare the plate done when the data from 51883 were included. We then went to plate 414 on cartridge 1. We found the fiber angles to be wrong, in fact non-existent ( all -720 ). We did a starPattern and computed new ones, after which guiding worked fine. The angles are included later in the log. Seeing improved while integrating on this plate, dropping well below 2 arcseconds. However since this plate was drilled for an hour and a half over, the window of opportunity on it was too small to finish it with this much moon around. The next cartridge was 8, plate 434, which had three exposures on it already from last night. Signal was much better on this plate, as we were pointed high in the sky and away from the moon, and the moon was getting close to setting. We finished with tonight's exposures alone, so including last night's data should make for loads of signal. Note that on this plate the altitude went a little higher than 80 degrees as it transited. The rotator at its greatest error was more than .1 degrees away from the nominal zero. The azimuth was as much as 40 arcseconds off and the altitude was less than 10. The errors seemed largest when at the meridian, and decreased on either side. This seems consistent with a high altitude pointing problem. Conspiratorially coinciding with the moon going down, was the arrival of high clouds, thwarting a change to imaging ( of course the seeing wasn't all that good either ). We continued on with spectroscopy on cartridge 6, plate 440, made available to us by heroic last minute efforts on the part of Norm. Since the moon was down, even with high clouds around, we nailed the S/N in 4 exposures. An observation on the timeliness of Son-of-Spectro updates after David's pre-shakeup code changes; the program is much better at keeping up. Even near the end of the night, it is updated within ten minutes of the end of an exposure. The temperatures for the mirrors in the TPM, were all zeros tonight. Has something been disconnected? EndNight completed successfully and the gang tape is on the shelf, ready to go.
