SYNOPSIS: ========= Four plates done ( 428, 436, 444, 271 ). One other plate with some observations ( 416 ) /mcptpm hard drive failure on host delayed start a couple hours. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Apparent mcp failure was traced to failed /mcptpm hard drive on host. While setting the fiducials this evening, the mcp became "unavailable" to the Menu. After following Robert's instructions for diagnosing the state of the mcp, and attempting to force the semaphore so we could regain control, we decided to reboot when control could not be regained. The mcp did not come up completely from the reboot, stopping when trying to load the file vx_tools/lib/vxt.mv167.o from host. We got Craig to take a look and he found numerous scsi errors in the log for /mcptpm on host. He then proceeded to swap the drive out and to get going quickly for the night made a temporary partition for /mcptpm on /data/scratch. This will be changed back for tomorrow's observing. We were on the sky by around 20:00, and got three exposures on plates 416 before moving on. It is not done. The rest of the plates we put on, were finished. It got much quicker once the moon went down. It is having an obvious effect on S/N at this phase. Things went smoothly the rest of the night, and we finished a total of four plates ( three of them between 02:00 and 05:30 ). Eric got more training tonight, "driving" for this night of spectroscopy. EndNight completed successfully and the gang tape is on the shelf, ready to go.
