Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 06:30:12 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20001230 (MJD 51909) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday December 30, 2000 (MJD 51909) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Steph Snedden (APO) Anders Jorgensen (LANL) PT VISITORS: ========= Eric Neilsen (FNAL) THE PLAN: ========= Spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS: ========= 6 plates done ( 394 again, 455, 462, 485, 270, 276 ) 1 plate nearly done, 465. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== A good night. Everything went smoothly. We came very close to getting seven plates done, and probably would have made it but for the early night cirrus. During the day counterweight 4 was repaired. Due to the way it failed, the lower limit switch is suspect. For now don't lower the counterweight below a setting of 40. In cartridge 2, all fibers look like something is on them. Perhaps it is at the slithead end where they are all together, where the dirt is. A PR has been filed ( 1719 ). It would be great if cartridge 2 could be checked out during the day when it is replugged to see if there is anything obvious. The focus at times tonight was much worse in the guider than other sources and information would indicate. With seeing approaching 3.0 arcseconds on the guider, we were still getting 6 to 8 (S/N)^2 per exposure, which I doubt would be true if the seeing were really that poor. Could it be the guider focus is getting a little off?
