Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 07:04:08 -0700 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5-m Obs Log 20001229 (MJD 51908) Friday, December 29, 2000 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51908) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Steph Snedden (APO) Dan Long (APO) Bing Chen - PT (JHU) French Leger (APO) - by phone VISITORS: ========= Eric Neilsen (FNAL) THE PLAN: ========= Science. We will do spectroscopy, since the imager is not currently usable. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Clear & cold. Spectroscopy of plates 454, 463, 464, 450, 481, 277 and 451 (all declared done). TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 4 mounted. Counterweights 1, 2 and 3 at 360. Counterweight 4 at 0. Spectro autofill connected in auto mode. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_23_2 Watcher: v2_8_9 MCP: v4_3_10 TPM: v2_1_6 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.1 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Clear and cold with light to moderate winds out of the NNE. Subarcsec seeing according to the PT and 3.5-m, but greater than 1 arcsec on the guider. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We ran endNight succesfully on the imager data taken last night, after a stray double-quote was removed from a comments field. These tapes will be shipped along with tonight's tapes. Scott Burles and David Schlegel worked on the arc lines problem noted in last night's log. Scott apparently installed a new (noCVS) version of Son Of Spectro that accounts for a weak line at about 8100 A that was showing large wavelength deviations in the first 40 or so fibers of r2. (Is this correct, Scott?) We had no problems with the arc lines in son of Spectro tonight. The imager was shut down safely today because of the degradation of the vacuum in dewar 2. This means we are only able to do spectroscopy. This also means that we were late going on the sky because the imager was on the telescope getting pumped down. We eventually mounted cartridge 5 and as we moved the counterweights to 270, we believe the plastic nut in the counterweight broke (see problems). We used the remaining three counterweights to balance the telescope and went to our first field at about 19:00. Counterweights 1-3 are set at 360. Counterweight 4 is at the bottom of its travel. The balance was okay in this configuration. The rest of the night went well, with only some minor problems, noted in the problems section. We declared plates 454, 463, 464, 450, 481, 277 and 451 done. Dan filed a PR on an earlier date about MS.ON applying fiducial corrections while tracking. RHL requested more info. This was obtained and is appended in the problems section. Counterweight #4: ----------------- We were switching from imager to cartridge. All CW went down with no problem. When returing to cartridge setting, counterweight number 4 made a crunching sound when it was commanded to move up. The motor stopped a short time later. The weight was still at the bottom of its travel. We suspect the plastic nut broke when it tried to move up. A PR was filed and French was called. He advised us to compensate for the rest of the night with the three good counterweights, which we did. Noisy Manipulator: ------------------ The outside manipulator arm is getting noisy, especially in the vertical axis. It probably just needs cleaning & a little lubrication. It may be temperature related as well. A PR was filed. Sticky Zenith Locking Pin: -------------------------- The zenith locking pin seems harder to move. It may need some lubrication. This may also be temperature related. A PR was filed. Son of Spectro: --------------- Son of Spectro seems to have problems if the flat & arc sequence information in the sdReport file isn't just right. For example, we ususally have a pre-flat sdcomment in the sdReport file followed by exposure information, then the pre-arc sdcomment follows. Tonight, there was a delay in the transfer causing the sdReport order on one sequence to be an sdcomment for the pre-flat, followed next by an sdcomment for the pre-arc, then followed by the flat & arc exposure info. Son of Spectro was unable to process the b2 information for this plate. Coincidence? This ocurred on frames 7894 and 7895.
