Neilsen, Jr." Subject: 2.5m obslog 20001223 (MJD 51902) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday December 23, 2000 (MJD 51902) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Eric Neilsen (FNAL) Bing Chen (JHU) PT VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Science. SYNOPSIS: ========= It was cloudy in the evening, and continued that way all night. The following plates were observed: Plate 394 was observed in sequence(s) 7780 for a total of 3600 seconds Plate 454 was observed in sequence(s) 7791 for a total of 2700 seconds Plate 464 was observed in sequence(s) 7799 for a total of 5400 seconds Plate 483 was observed in sequence(s) 7810 for a total of 7200 seconds Plate 451 was observed in sequence(s) 7823 for a total of 4500 seconds Of these, we only finished plate 483. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Some clouds in the afternoon, so we started with spectroscopy, plate 394, cartridge 4. We finished this last night, but there are no other plates observable now, so we will go ahead and get 394 with very high signal to noise. After lowering the imager off the telescope in the afternoon, we discover that the plates which are supposed to cover the image power supply LED's were sitting on top of the saddle above the power supplies in the images, and must have been there during observing last night. They were still there, and nothing appeared damaged. This is not a good place to store them. During the installation of the corrector lens, we heard a loud bang when engaging the latches. On further examination, we found the cartridge was not all the way up when the latches were engaged, but about 0.2 inches short. Apparently, the corrector encountered resistence here which fooled us into thinking it was all the way up. We raised the lift until it was completely supporting the corrector, released the latches, and lowered the corrector. There did not appear to be any damage, and it was not apparent what the cause of the resistance was. On raising the corrector again, there was again resistance at roughly the same point (about 100 lb of resistance at 23 inches, by the lift display), but we kept going about 0.2 inches further, until the corrector was all the way on, engaged the latches, and continued as usual. As we started with the same plate and cartridge, at about the same time list night, Dan applied the same correction, and found it to be very good still tonight: the offsets are repeatable. There was no scale change needed in the switch from plate 454 to plate 464. There does seem to be a strong correlation between plate scale and "plate vintage." Plate 464 was not shown as done by son-of-spectro, and so we have not declared it such, but the plots given by SoS for this plate look very nice, better than 483, which SoS regarded as being done. Beginning around 2am, watcher through repeated iop pump critical errors. The ion pump pressure was between 1.4 and 1.5 microtor through this half of the night.
