SYNOPSIS: ========= Mediocre seeing and occasional high clouds kept us doing spectroscopy. 6 Plates done: 390, 406, 427, 448, 449, 278 No response to goDrift -bias after ( due to? ) photo1 problem. Cheshire guide stars on cartridge 7. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== It was a good night for spectroscopy. We finished six plates. The seeing never got good enough to convince us to change to imaging, so we carried on with high efficiency spectroscopy. No response to goDrift -bias after ( due to? ) photo1 problem. The error message from the DA was that diskio took longer than 5.5 seconds error on ID1. Dewars 1 and 2 stopped scrolling and showed a pattern of red lines. We rebooted the DA and waited for the blue screens, then performed the usual initNight and tape loading. When goDrift -bias was issued, no response was ever seen from that iop again. In fact if one tried to get out it would end up in some debugger which no one knew how to talk to. See pr 1643 for the behavior once dumped out to this >> prompt. After the goDrift was issued, one could no longer connect to the imager, until the port was logged out. When it was logged out however, one could connect to the imager and issue commands, including startscan, successfully. The DA and archiver seemed to be happy, but obviously something wasn't. Apparently the third reboot was the charm. This time, after typing the same setup commands, goDrift -bias worked. The only difference, was that it was something like 25 minutes between the reboot and setting up for the drift. The other times it was within 5 minutes of the screens going blue. We couldn't find guide stars with cartridge 7 plate 449. We found an fk5 star, in fact we found two different fk5 stars, and could place them in either fiber 10 or 11. Try as we might, we never could find the guide stars, even with a huge spiral pattern. So we went on and did cartridge 6 plate 448. No trouble acquiring stars here, though an fk5 trip was needed. Once cartridge 6 was finished we decided to put cartridge 7 back on to see if the problem was still there. Now for the punch line. A gotoField was all it took to get half the guide stars down the fibers! Son-of-Spectro had trouble on a couple of plates 278 and 390 never finished updating b2. It seemed there was a problem with the preCalib frames, or at least that is where SoS stopped updating. In the case of 390 it was the arc, and for 278 is was the flat and the arc. The postCalib frames processed without problems for both plates.
