SYNOPSIS: ========= Variable high clouds and poor seeing made for low efficiency. Plate 446 done, Plates 390, 427, 278 with some exposures. Fiducial behavior better defined Spectro TEC power supply continued problems M2 axial C MiG still reads zero Imager ion pump pressure hanging around 1.5 micro-torr GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We got one plate done in difficult conditions. Plate 446 on cartridge 6 was done in 6 exposures. Plate 427 however wasn't even half way done in 9 exposures. The clouds were especially thick during this period. Seeing of around 2 arcseconds made the clouds seem even thicker. Fiducial elucidation: We found something about how the fiducial error correction works tonight that explains a lot about some of the observed behavior of the fiducials lately. I don't know how long this has been true, but what we found was that if you have been running with the TCC and issue an axis stop to keep the tcc from fighting the mcp, the fiducial corrections will be automatically applied when you move with the mcp. If you issue an axis init from the tcc before moving with the mcp to set fiducials, the correction will not automatically be applied. If you hit "f" when the mcp has already automatically corrected, the correction is applied a second time ( when it really shouldn't be ). This explains two things noted in recent weeks. First, unless you have a murmur window open to see the fiducial crossings, the menu's position for the fiducial crossing will not change with repeated crossings when the correction is automatically applied, because the correction is applied before the value is displayed. Second, it also explains why if you hit "f", you can see such large errors, even on repeated crossings. If you hit "f" on the first pass, when the correction was 2 arcseconds. You then get a 2 arcsecond error, by adding the error in twice. On the next crossing, the auto MS.ON will dutifully correct the 2 arcsec error you just added, which you will then add right back in by hitting "f". This is how you can continually get 2 arcsecond errors no matter how many times you cross the fiducial. The moral here is to make sure you issue an axis init from the tcc prior to setting fiducials. You also might want to have a murmur window open to prove to yourself that fiducial crossings are registering and corrections are not being applied automatically ( iop> startMurmur -grep tLatch ). I don't know if any of these behaviors are bugs, but they were certainly aspects unknown to me until tonight. The spectro TEC power supply ( formerly on the imager ) was at zero V on several occasions tonight. This even when the voltage and current were both lowered to 16. It would recover after a while on its own. Imager ion pump pressure varying between 1.4 and 1.6 for the second half of the night. It seemed pretty steady. Could there be a slow leak somewhere? M2 axial C MiG is still reading zero after battery replacement. In the middle of taking a guider image, the following message popped up in the SOP window which was running things. Winds were generally out of the north. When they had some westerly component our seeing improved to better than 2 arcseconds. If due north or a little east it was 2.0" or worse.
