SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== We are back in business. We got one plate done! We closed due to high wind the second half of the night. Wind became high and we closed around 00:30. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Jon told us the chiller were running fine during the day time. When we did afternoon checkout, the volt = 0.0 again. Pete reset it so that it is running at current=18, volt~16 - 18 again. He also noted that when touched, the chiller panel display for the imager was warm while the spectro display was cold. After typing "endDrift" we get the following message over and over. "makeRunLog completed successfully for run 1980" Since the bias runs we ran tonight was 1985 and 1986, this is clearly WRONG. Actually what is more spooky is that this is the run number taken on the day we had software difficulties on the night of Dec. 14. Could there have been some process left behind still from that night? While fiducializing, we had to use AZ V10 ~135 fiducial instead of the canonical v33 fiducial. v33 fiducial did not get better than 2" again. Now that we have M1 back with the setmir values zeroed, the first for us to do is to revert the default.dat file to when the M1 was functioning. Remember, we had to create a new one few nights ago when we tried to observe with uncollimated M1. We thought we will be closer to optical collimation using the default.dat from when it was collimated at the beginning of this dark run. Unfortunately, adopting this new default.dat, and then relaxing the mirror (homing was done by Russell in the afternoon) gave very different MIG values from what they were at the beginning of the run. After some agonizing moments, we found out that we had a corrupted default.dat due to flaky editing. We had all but D and F within spec. Since D is the one we have been having the past 4 nights, we are not surprised. But we thought F had no business being off the nominal. So we re-relaxed the home. We found both the MIGS and GALIL looked very similar to what we had at the beginning of the run. The pointing was not too bad. The star showed up on the chip not too far from the center. We had to put in offset, (0.002000, 0.005000) to center the star in the middle of the field. We then focused, and found best focus @-550 T=4.8C -- off from what Dan's, but it is also warmer. The mirror numbers were in the Mirrors section, We went to another star to check pointing and it was quite good. So we decided to try doing spectro. We started with cart5, plate 425. When we went to field, there were stars in the guider image!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We centered, focused, took preCalibs and started science. First science data in 5 days! We REJOICED in the control room. We cannot tell you how good it felt to be getting scientific photons coming in after the past several days of struggle. Thank you French!!!!!!!!!!! FWHM ranged from ~1.8 to 2.5. This plate took 4 exposure to finish according to SoS. The first 5 minutes of the fourth exposure, however, had the flat field screen still closed. Pete started the DIMM so that we could get an independent seeing measurement. Cart 1 was in the plug room -nice, warm, and toasty. This is because when we got the engcam few days ago, we had to move a cart from the bay to get the engcam out. The guide stars, once acquired, were not very well in focus. We did a new guiderFocus command and set a new focus of -25 (the old was -200). We could not finish this plate. The seeing was poor and the high wind forced us to close before we could finish. We could not remember if abort command for sop worked, but apparently it did not. So we sent "mechSend cs" command to close the shutter before running out to get the scope inside the enclosure. Engcam is now inside the support building. We waited with cart 6 on the scope to open, but the wind did not come down for the rest of the night. By the way, to make sure the spectro system or sop are not confused after our trying to abort the last exposure, we took a bias and it seems all was well. While we waited, Pete debugged the cloud camera fish-net pattern. Go Pete GO! A PR was filed for a true fix. We swapped imager dewar around 5am. When we were doing the end of the night walk around, we noticed that the imager chiller showed volt=15.7 and current=15.6 instead of both of them being around 17 at the beginning of the night. The vent next to the LED display still felt a little warm although not as much as it did at the beginning of the night. Probably it was warmer at the beginning of the night because it was not running (both volt and current showed 0 until we reset it ) when we checked at the beginning of the night. The chiller does not seem to be as happy as it should be. This chiller problem can potentially cause the imager to have poor seeing data. We hope it will be back to full operation very soon. endNight ran successfully.
