OBSERVING PLAN ============== Collimation and pointing model, then science with imaging as priority, and spectroscopy if seeing poor. OBSERVING SUMMARY ================= We did not achieve any of the aims in the plan. The primary mirror transverse (M1D) servo has failed again, leaving us with a telescope out of collimation causing very bad coma and pointing, and requiring mechanical/electrical repair. The MIG measuring the position of the secondary mirror's third axial (M2C) motion is still reading zero, so we are also not certain the secondary is in the right place. OBSERVERS' LOG (A.K.A PROBLEMS SECTION) ======================================= We had hoped to start tonight with (a) the telescope returned to mechanical collimation, and (b) the primary mirror transverse (M1D) servo control board replaced by the previously-calibrated board. Unfortunately, the mechanical collimation had not been completed because a required measuring instrument had not been returned from repair (it is now expected tomorrow). Our fallback plan was to try to do spectroscopy, as last night we had achieved an approximate collimation and found the small residual pointing offsets. The primary mirror oscillations we experienced last night were attributed to a poorly-calibrated controller introduced during the debugging of the M1D servo failure two nights ago. The original board was put back in the controller today. However, at the start of the night, the M1D MIG showed the primary about 4.5 mm down from where we left it last night, suggesting the mirror was again resting on its lower rubber limit buffer. The other MIGs were within tolerances of where we left them last night. All the Galil servo actuators were showing the nominal values also established last night. We tried driving the M1D Galil across its range without producing a change in the MIG reading (which is measuring the actual mirror position, not the servo state). In case the problem was in the M1D MIG, we rebooted the MIG controller (no change) and slewed to an FK5 star to see if the offsets from last night were still correct. They were not. However, when we put in the (large) offsets from two nights ago (when M1D last failed), we recovered a badly comatic image of the star. After consulting with Jim and French, we concluded that we were not going to be able to find a solution without engineering work tomorrow, and decided to close for the night and find other tasks to do. We are also still missing the M2C axial MIG values (reads zero), awaiting a replacement battery in the MIG itself. IMAGING DATA ============ Run/Frms/Type ({} = bias) ------------- None SPECTROSCOPY DATA ================= Exp./Type ({} = bias) -------------- None TAPES ===== To FNAL: None At APO: None PROBLEMS ======== See Observers' Log section. SAFETY ISSUES ============= The recent high winds have twice blown away the cryo gloves used for telescope LN2 changes (luckily recovered some distance away, but once found jammed under the building). The present trick of jamming the gloves under the spectro LN2 fill pipe atop the doghouse is clearly not working. For a more secure place to store the gloves, we suggest either three short lengths of 6-inch diameter plastic pipe (one for each of the three pairs of gloves) mounted under the telescope laptop mount, or a small drawer in the same place. A change request was raised (2_5m-enclosure/1677). TELESCOPE AND ENCLOSURE STATUS ============================== End of night: Telescope stowed at 30 deg alt with the engineering camera mounted.
