Visitors: David Summers (NMSU) OBSERVING PLAN ============== Science. Imaging as priority, then spectroscopy. OBSERVING SUMMARY ================= A night of intermittent bad weather interspersed with mirror control problems, ending with imager pressure problems requiring pump-down. OBSERVERS' LOG ============== Opened at sunset and mounted cartridge 4. When the telescope go to the field, we noted problems with the M1 and M2 MIG values. We determined possible work-arounds for these about 20:20 (we now think we were wrong - see problems section below for details), and were then faced by the wind gusting over 35mph. As the seeing was really bad, (>4 arcsec reported by both PT and 3.5m), we put the shed back on the telescope to wait for the wind to decide whether it was increasing or decreasing. Opened again at 01:10 to observe cartridge 6. No guide stars on field. fk5InFiber showed nothing. spiralPattern 5 10 found nothing. Likewise on 10, 20 and 30 arcsec spirals. Try fk5 -fiber 11 in case fiber 10 is u/s. No good. Try starInFiber on beta Orionis (v=0.12). No! We tried to re-fiducialize and had problems getting better than 2 arcsec correction on the canonical Az fiducial (#33, 120:45:50), but got to 0.3 arcsec correction on #10 at 135:46:05 (Lynn has been asked by email to inspect #33 to see if there is a problem). We got the Alt fiducial error to 1.5 arcsec, rotator cc 150 ionpumphi ! but we continued to see critical error reports with climbing pressures. We contacted JEG who asked us to track the pressure and contact him directly if it rose above 2.0 microTorr. Note that the tracked pressures (with 'cc imstat' commands in iop) were recorded after the critical-error events and so probably underestimate the peak pressures). By the end of the night, the mean recorded pressures reached 1.8 microTorr, but we saw a spike of > 11 microTorr, and called JEG again. Under instructions from him and JB, we mounted the imager on the telescope and prepared to warm the CCDs ready for pump down by turning off the 180L dewar, forcing a fill of the secondary dewar and typing a 'cc warmccds' and 'cc 11 vcheck' to set and check the CCD voltages for warming. We also set up the turbo pump with help from Alan Uomoto and Norm Blythe. As of 09:45, JB is pumping down the imager. - The doghouse side of the cover of cartridge 6 fell off as we were pushing the cart to the telescope. We found the nut holding the inside part of the latch was loose and the latch had moved to 90 deg off its correct position. We finger tightened it, but this suggests all the cover latches should all be checked. A PR was raised (cartridge-hardware/1668). SAFETY ISSUES ============= - The new temperature sensors in the lower enclosure stick out from the cable tray above the rotating racks. Care is needed during pre-flight checks to not head-butt them or poke your eye out when inspecting the azimuth drive area. - Several telescope components (shock absorbers) and associated bolts were found loose on the top of the concrete pier. These were moved to the shelf around the enclosure wall. TELESCOPE AND ENCLOSURE STATUS ============================== End of night: Telescope stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 2/plate 416 mounted.
