SYNOPSIS: ========= Imager calibration tests concluded. Fiducial tables implemented. 2" Pointing model SOP testing... preCalib failure, v3_23_0 show stopper GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== The afternoon was spent editing and installing a version of the mcp containing the fiducial tables generated last night. It was declared and tagged as v4_3_10. The tpm is at v2_1_6 with a fix for the temperature scale. We had some trouble setting the Az and Alt fiducials. It went with no trouble earlier when the telescope was in the enclosure. It started to miss when the telescope was out of the enclosure. It had the most trouble going slowly ( 5000 - 20000 cts/sec ), but registered nearly every time going quickly ( 50000 - 100000 cts/sec ). Later checks of crossings during the pointing model seemed to indicate that things were working well. It took several crate reboots of the DA to get all of the monitors displaying the blue screen indicating that the reboot was finished. It would stall showing the configuration info that now comes up with the new video cards. After about 5 tries we got all the monitors to show blue screens ( though we didn't have to reboot all the crates 4 times, since if all three of a crate were blue we could leave it alone ). The instrument block of the engineering camera was modified to reflect the change in the focus when the corrector is not present ( now the default configuration when the EC is mounted ). Focus w/o corrector is now approximately zero. If the corrector is installed, it will be about 2100. At about 19:45 after starting a pointing model and only getting a couple of points in, the telescope stopped tracking in azimuth. We checked the interlocks and found an overcurrent on Az. It would only fail moving in the negative direction with the TCC. If the mcp was used, there was no failure. It became apparent the telescope was running into the windbaffle when moving in the negative direction. We called French and he suspected the recently installed shock absorbers. He came in and removed part of the shock absorber. That did the trick, there were no more aborts, and the pointing model continued at about 20:45. At about 21:00 we started getting ion pump pressure warnings from the watcher. It jumped up from nearly zero to 1.6 micro-torr and stayed there. Connie decided to change the imager code ( only until rebooted ) to trigger the critical error on 2.25 micro-torr instead of 1.5 micro-torr to keep the watcher from driving all insane. We are also to keep an eye on things with imstat. We collected data for a 72 point model, and got 2 arcsecond rms! Not quite believing this, we repeated the same grid, and got the same result. The two data sets were combined and a 140 point model was generated with 2 arcsec rms. A test of a few points on the sky after the model was implemeted indeed showed that stars fell within 2 arcseconds of the center ( even for altitudes up to 75 deg ). There is an exception to this rosy scenario. If a fiducial is missed during a slew it is easily possible for enough error to accumulate to keep the axis from correcting when a fiducial is eventually crossed. All bets are off on pointing then. It doesn't happen too often ( only a couple times during the models, and once during the checks ). A good thing to do is setup a murmur log looking only for tLatch. Check the slew when you gotoField. If you see no stars and there is a "too large to correct" message in the murmur log, try issuing a correct for that axis in telrun. for Azimuth: telrun> talk tcc_tel2 "tel1 correct" for Altitude: telrun> talk tcc_tel2 "tel2 correct" for rotator: terrun> talk tcc_tel2 "ir correct" We decided to switch to a cartridge and check some of the outstanding PRs for SOP. Sadly in making the swap, we popped the screws on the spectro doors installing the cartridge. The doors, cartridge, and spectrographs are undamaged. We managed to get 3 replacement plastic screws back in spectro-1 to secure the door. On spectro-2 however all but one of the screws broke flush with the mounting on the spectrograph, and could not be easily removed. The one screw was replaced and the other end of the door was taped down to hold it in place. The door for spectro-2 cannot be closed with the tape currently holding the assembly. This should be checked and repaired during the day, as the tape is only a very temporary fix. Profuse apologies to all for the extra work. With both doors secured in an open position, cartridge 6 was installed. We proceeded to check some SOP PRs. sop/1308 open FFScreen on gotoField closed ( works ) sop/1593 "empty" fibers in fwhm calculation closed ( works ) sop/1569 smear cmd should open FFScreen closed ( works ) iop/1323 catch ion pump pressure error closed ( works ) We had trouble with preCalib ( or gotoField -gflat ) in versions v3_23_0 and v3_22_0 of iop. preCalib worked for the same cart/plate combo for v3_19_1 ( the version used during the last dark run ). The problem occurs when the guider flat is analysed. The rather cryptic error message Background: 64.000000 258.08126700000003 194.081267 Fatal error: Assertion failed: "boxsize nrow/2 && boxsize ncol/2", file "scStarcalc.c", line 1064 One is then dumped to a >> prompt from which one cannot escape except to issue a ctrl-z, followed by jobs, and kill %1, which terminates the sop session. See the problems section for more details of the failure. We tried bd17smear, but clouds and lots of moonlight made it impossible to find stars.
