Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2000 05:23:45 -0700 (MST) From: Pete Newman Subject: 2.5m obslog 20001201 (MJD 51880) Friday Dec 1 2000 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51880) OBSERVING TEAM ============== Steph Snedden (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Eric Neilsen (FNAL) Bryan Laubscher - PT (LANL) VISITORS ======== Steve Kent (FNAL) PLAN ==== Science. Imaging as priority, then spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS ======== General cirrus at sunset, so spectroscopy from start. Lost guide stars to thicker cloud at 19:30, having achieved a (S/N)^2 of 0.8 in 40 minutes. Waited for improvement then gave up and put the telescope in the enclosure at 22:20 as the satellite maps show worse coming, which did. No data shipped. TELESCOPE STATUS ================ Stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 2/plate 416 mounted. Counterweights at 280. Extractor fan on/off: 15:30 / 05:05 Enclosure open/closed: 16:00 / 05:00 NB: enclosure on with doors wide open from 22:00 to 05:00 INTERLOCKS ========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED ============= IOP/SOP: v3_19_1 Watcher: v2_8_6 MCP: v4_3_9 TPM: v2_1_3 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.1 WEATHER SUMMARY (see below for hourly data) =========================================== At twilight, thin overcast cirrus with heavier cloud on horizons. At 19:30, lost guide stars in the spectrograph as cloud thickened. Remained bad all night. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details) ================================================= East door half opened at 16:00. Full opening delayed by spike in 1 micron dust count until about 18:00. Enclosure off and ready to observe by 17:55. Thin cirrus overhead with thicker cloud on all horizons. Started observing with cartridge 4/plate 418 anyway. Lost guide star signal at 19:30. With the telescope in the enclosure, we changed to cartridge 2/plate 416 at 20:40 in hope of clearing skies, which did not happen. We repeated the test of the binned-drift that failed last night (see log for MJD 51879), and it failed in exactly the same way again, so at least it is a repeatable error. The ball is in Connie's court on this. As we failed to get a (S/N)^2 above 1.0 we are not shipping any tapes. If anyone feels they _really_ want the data, please contact the observers before the disk files are deleted (which will be about December 2 about 3pm MST).
