Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 06:51:05 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20001130 (MJD 51879) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 30, 2000 (MJD 51879) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Eric Nielsen (FNAL) Bryan Laubscher (LANL) PT VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Science. SYNOPSIS: ========= Two plates done ( 415, 419 ). Three other plates with some observations ( 426, 435, 271 ) High clouds most of the night made getting S/N slow going. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We started out the night with cartridge 4, plate 419 on the telescope. We finished it in four exposures, and the proceeded to cartridge 2 plate 415, and also finished it in 4 exposures. The remaining cartridges we did were not so lucky ( 5 426, 6 435, 3 271 ). The clouds were thick enough that we could not finish any of these plates while they were reasonably placed. The imager photo 1 leading power supply glitched today. Around 16:15 this afternoon the watcher began showing strange values for all imager voltages. When the imager was checked, the +15V section of the leading photo 1 power supply had a red led and the output was something like 10 percent than 100. Jon Brinkmann power cycled that power supply. It came back at 100% and stayed there. All voltages instantly returned to normal. The supply was left in place. When opening, the 15 degree stop didn't get out of the way when bringing the telescope down. We found the air line to one end of the piston was barely connected. In fact it came out entirely when checking it. I stuffed it back in the fitting and it seemed to grab it and hold it securely, and the stop worked fine thereafter. The fittings for the air lines should be checked to be sure it is really working properly. Tonight we had to restart a sop session. When we did, the preCalib command failed on the guider flat. Taking a guider image, then repeating the preCalib fixed the problem. Cart 6, guide fiber 7 has low throughput. It appears to either have a lot of crud on the end of the fiber, or maybe the fiber itself is damaged and only transmitting partially. When things got slowed due to clouds, I tried taking fast binned drift with the imager in the dog house. I only got as far as issuing a normal bias drift with Connie's code sourced, before getting an error. See the problems section for details. It was brought up tonight that maybe Smear would be better done in the middle of the set of science exposures, rather than at the end. If smear is only done once it would be a more accurate representation of object placement on the fibers. Fiber 11 of cartridge 3 was missing. Not simply unplugged or broken, but not even a patch of bias region showing up at the position for fiber 11. A message in the sop guider window mentioned that "star 11 has NULL region:disabling". A look at the guider flat showed the section to be hacked out by SOP ( the yellow rectangle in the displayed image ) went slightly beyond the edge of the chip. Could this be the problem? Could the preCalib failure earlier be related to this problem? We stopped getting cloud camera updates at around 04:00. The camera itself was happily scanning away and putting data on galileo, but marmot was complaining that no new images were showing up and the scripts had failed. The cloud camera has stopped for some reason at or near the end of the night for the last three nights. Tonight the PT ran its endNight earlier than the last two nights, at 04:00 in fact. Could it be that scp-ing the night's images is somehow interfering with the transfer of camera images while it is scanning? EndNight completed successfully and the gang tape is on the shelf, ready to go.
