We were setting up the imager in twilight, but the clouds started to come in. So we swapped to spectro. After we swapped the instruments and changed the counter weight position. MCP and TPM both hung. TPM showed no numbers and we could not telnet to mcp. The crate hosting both MCP and TPM was rebooted. We were going to try to follow Sir Robert's instruction on what to do when MCP hangs, but since the first thing to do in his instruction was to telnet to mcp, when we could not do so we decided to reboot the whole crate. We filed a PR for it. We had to refiducialize the axis. cart 4 plate 394 --- guide fiber 3 is disconnected or bad. seeing is around 2". Focus was at -100 cart 5 plate 406 -- repeat plate seeing is around 2". Focus -200 After three exposures, r2 showed s/n of 14.3. So we took additional exposure. While we waited for SoS to update the S/N, we took smear and postCalib. The 4th science exposure is the last exposure for this plate. cart 1 plate 414 We could not get guide stars in 1, 4,5,6,7 to get centered. These stars were on right upper half in the startMon image. We thought maybe the cartridge parameter info was not the newest greatest. To be sure to get the angle info, we did loadCartridge 1 414 -cartridgeDir /data/spectro and selected the older cartridge angle info. This info resulted in the startMon loosing the overlay. The message we got from sop is in the problem section. We tried getting more guide cam exposures, but they were not getting updated on the startMon. We thought SOP is now too confused and decided to out of sop and back in to start fresh. We restarted sop and with the fiber angle info we were using before (angles from 2 nights ago) which we tried but was not very successful getting guide stars in earlier. We even had hard time getting the Fk5 star in the middle because the orientation was not correct. We used the rotateAbout command (I have not used it for along time!) to get the stars (most of them at least) in and recalculated the angles. The compute results show that all stars were not in in the fibers, or at least not good enough, to "compute". But since we could now see stars in most fibers on the monitor, we decided to start the guider and taking science exposures. By the way, there is a number, FWHM info for guide 10, in the middle of the red circle showing the position of guide 10. Therefore we cannot see the star in the middle. Here is the new angles. we are not sure how good these are. After all, half of them are still -720 angles. Cirrus increased during our observations. SoS gave us horrible S/N in b2 = 0.5. b1=5.2 which is ok. Can cirrus be responsible for this? Or can this be from the stars not falling on the fibers in sp2??? From the SoS, we knew we could not get the required S/N in any reasonable time (b2 got S/N of 1.4 after 3x900 exposures) so we decided to go to the next cartridge. The amount of thin clouds/cirrus was also increasing. cart 7 plate 437 ------------------ When we went to the field, the clouds were getting too thick so we waited for a while. When we were able to see all guide stars, we decided to try getting science exposures. When we tried taking preCalib, it looked like it took a flat and then gave us message we did not understand what it meant. The message is in the problem section. We found out that there was no calib frames taken. We decided to try again the preCalib and this time it worked except for it still gave us messages we have never seen before. The message is in the problem section. Despite of the error messages, SoS said the flats and the arc were fine. The science frames gave poor S/N (0.5ish). So we stopped data taking. While we were watching the clouds and thinking about closing, the sky started to clear. So we started taking data on cart 7 despite that it was past the prime time. We were still able to finish off this plate before twilight. While we were doing postCalib, we got another message which did not understand. The message is in the problem section. Despite of the messages, SoS claims we are done with this plate. The imager dewar went empty before twilight. We swapped the dewar. Can we have the day crew change the imager dewar in the middle of the day to a new full one to break the cycle of changing dewar around twilight? We have been closely watching the imager dewar weight to see when it becomes empty the second half of the night. We don't want to change the dewar in the middle of the night, and luckily it seems to run out close enough to twilight so that we don't have to swap it before we are done taking data. But it will be nice if we didn't have to worry about the dewar at all. endNight ran successfully DATA ACQUISITION (see IOP/SOP output below): =========================================== IMAGING: -------- Run Type --- ---- 1898 scope bias 1899 twilight 86S but clouds came in SPECTROSCOPY: ------------- Exposure Type -------- ---- 7190 bias 7191 bias cart 4 plate 394 ------------------- 7193 flat 7193 arc 7194 science 7195 science 7196 science 7197 smear 7198 flat 7199 arc cart 5 plate 404 ------------------- 7200 flat 7201 arc 7202 science 7203 science 7204 science 7205 smear 7206 flat 7207 arc 7208 science cart 1 plate 414 -------------------- 7209 flat 7208 arc 7211 bias -- we thought we confused sop and exited. so this is the new sop session init bias 7212 science 7213 science 7214 science 7215 smear 7216 flat 7217 arc cart 7 plate 437 ------------------ 7218 flat 7219 arc 7220 science -- more noise than signal 7221 science -- small signal 7222 science -- decent signal starts 7223 science 7224 science 7225 smear 7226 flat 7227 arc MIRRORS: ======== PRIMARY: scale change has been applied. -------- MIGS last dark run.
