Imaging if possible, else spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== A little imaging, but mostly spectroscopy of plates 414, 419, 441. Problems with instChange, spectro flats and endNight (see the problems section). TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 1 on. Counterweights at 280. INTERLOCKS: =========== none bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_19_1 Watcher: v2_8_6 MCP: v4_3_9 TPM: v2_1_3 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.1 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Clear & fairly cold. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We checked out telescope and instrument systems and were on the sky at sunset. Pre-flight checkout notes: In an attempt to improve mirror thermalisation, the east door of the enclosure was opened wide to above mirror height at 15:50 The portable fans were also running. Wind very light, humidity 36%. During equipment check, found the PMSS alarm light was off, so turned off the audible alarm defeat switch. However, during first slew of telescope from alt=30 to alt=60, the audible alarm sounded. Pressure gauge was reading 42psi, so alarm defeat turned on again. All other preflight checks ok. Because it was warm during the day and the temperature felt like it was dropping at sunset, we believed the telescope would not be in thermal equilibrium soon. This was also based on our experience from the last few nights. At sunset you could still feel a temperature difference between inside the enclosure and outside. Thus, even though it was photometric, we opted to start with spectroscopy. Spectroscopy: ------------- Cartridge 7, plate 419: ---------------------- As we were focusing the guide stars, we saw evidence of astigmatism (in fact we used it to get a rough focus), so we believe that going to spectroscopy first was the right thing to do. After 5 exposures, we declared this plate done. We needed to go to an FK5 star and apply offsets to find our field. Offsets needed: 0.002928, 0.003532 Scale factor: 0.999740 Do not use the first smear... guiding had not been stopped. Imaging: ------- Seeing appeared to stabilize, so at 20:45 we mounted the imager. Based on our guide star FWHM's (about 2.2") and the 1.5" images from the 3.5-m, we realized we might not meet imaging seeing spec, but we figured we were close enough that we should give it a try. We rescanned 86N from lamba=-154 to -142.2. The seeing was marginal..in spec barely, except we did see some chips go in and out of spec, usually at the edge of the array. The range was from 1.3 to 1.8 arcsec, averaging 1.5 arcsec. By lambda=-148, most of the chips were in spec. At lambda -144, frame 113, the seeing blew up to about 2 arcsec. We ended the drift at 00:24, lambda -142.2, frame 122. Run 1869 -------- Stripe 86 N Lambda=-154 to -142.2 Skippy : rotator offset -0.06 (applied) Science start frame 44 at time 23:39 Science end frame 122 at time 00:24 Run 1870 -------- Some out of focus frames to check collimation. We *should* be in thermal equilibrium by now, I hope. Start time about 00:30 Nominal focus=-235 Sent to -535 for frames 14 & 15 Sent to 65 for frames 20 & 21 *** Note that both sides of focus showed donuts that were brighter on the top & right. I think we are a bit out of collimation...looked like coma to me. *** Because the seeing blew up, we switched back to spectroscopy. Spectroscopy: ------------ Cartridge 8, plate 414: We started this cartridge late, so it was low in the west. We only did two exposures on it. We did not declare it done. We had one star on the edge of fiber 10 when we slewed to the field. We applied offsets to bring in enough stars to guide. Offsets needed: -0.000298, 0.000913 Scale Factor: 0.999710 Do not use smear...the flat field petals were closed. We'll get it next time. Cartridge 1, Plate 441: ----------------------- This cartridge needed fiber angles. We got them (below). We took 4 exposures and declared this plate done. We acquired 5 stars in the fibers immediately on slewing to the field (high alt in the N). Offsets needed: -0.000298, 0.000913 Scale Factor: 0.999970 FiberAngles: New Cartridge Info Entry: Please alert if this looks very different than Old Entry GPROBE 1 1 T 149 442 24.5 -129.4 GPROBE 1 2 T 151 298 24.5 -228.5 GPROBE 1 3 T 154 150 24.5 -183.9 GPROBE 1 4 T 260 444 24.5 -213.8 GPROBE 1 5 T 264 299 24.5 138.2 GPROBE 1 6 T 266 153 24.5 76.1 GPROBE 1 7 T 374 446 24.5 71.6 GPROBE 1 8 T 375 301 24.5 92.0 GPROBE 1 9 T 379 154 24.5 104.0 GPROBE 1 10 T 522 226 40.8 -191.1 GPROBE 1 11 T 675 429 40.8 8.1 DATA ACQUISITION (see IOP/SOP output below): =========================================== IMAGING: -------- Run Frames Type --- ------ ---- 1865 42 bias in doghhouse (checkout) 1866 29 bias on telescope 1867 9 ignore - axis abort 1868 58 calib - chasing focus 1869 130 science stripe 86 N 1870 36 calib - out-of-focus (collimation) frames SPECTROSCOPY: ------------- Exposure Type -------- ---- 7017 bias (checkout) 7018 pre-flat cart 7, plate 419 7019 pre-arc 7020 science 7021 science 7022 science 7023 science 7024 science 7025 post-flat 7026 post-arc 7027 smear - bad-don't use 7028 smear - a good one 7029 bias 7030 pre-flat cart 8, plate 414 7031 pre-arc 7032 science 7033 science 7034 post-flat 7035 post-arc 7036 smear - bad-don't use. 7037 pre-flat cartridge 1, plate 441 7038 pre-arc 7039 science 7040 science 7041 science 7042 science 7043 post-flat 7044 post-arc 7045 smear TAPES: ====== Shipped to FNAL: JL3156 JL3157 JL3158 JL3159 JL3160 JL3161 JL3162 At APO: JL3163 JL3164 JL3165 JL3166 JL3167 JL3168 JL3169 MIRRORS: ======== PRIMARY: -------- MIGS Axial A= 0.0209 Axial B= -0.0340 Axial C= 0.007 Transverse D= 0.2220 Lateral E= 1.8984 Lateral F= 0.3989 GALILS Commanded: 4890.,-2485.,195.,-6642.,-103.,-334. Imager dewar weight at 06:00: 119 lb. PROBLEMS: ========= SOP/ instChange: ------------------- We used mcpFullAccess in SOP to steal authority in order to use instChange. InstChange caused an axis abort because we were already above 70 deg in alt, and apparently it was confused about the maximum speed to use. We could not then resteal authority in the mcpMenu. We ended up rebooting the MCP and logging out the spectro camera & mechanical ports. We probably didn't need to reboot the MCP. Logging out the ports is enough. We would like instChange to handle the velocity better when alt is greater than 70 deg. Here is what caused the abort: Nov 19 20:39:13 sdssmcp tTelnetCmd dsc_W_trcWarn Max vel. for altitude exceeded: 500000 Nov 19 20:39:14 sdssmcp tTelnetCmd dsc_W_trcWarn Max vel. for rotator exceeded: 500000 Spectroscopy/ Flat field problems?: ----------------------------------- For all of our cartridges tonight, we had *many* warnings like the following for all 4 cameras DIVIDEFLAT: sdR-r2-00007033.fit: WARNING: Reject 1344 low points in trace 229 We also got the following for both red cameras QUICKEXTRACT: sdR-r2-00007033.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 50.2102 electrons (WARM CCD OR TWILIGHT?) You can see all the messages by going to the Son-of-Spectro web page for this MJD. We checked that the flat field lamps were all coming on and at their remembered brightnesses. They appeared to be fine. We also checked the camera temps and voltages. All were in spec, and we got these messages throughout the night, so twilight was not the problem. We are not sure what the problem is here, but David Schlegel is aware of it. endNight: --------- We had a short scan (run 1867) that we ended quickly because of a rotator abort. This scan caused endNight to fail in the runSummaries phase. Here is the transcript: Mon Nov 20 06:39:14 MST 2000 Starting /mcptpm/51868 archiving. 393681 blocks to archive.
