SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Stripe 86 N from lambda -154 to lambda -139 (seeing out of spec). FASTT field C (marginally in spec). Humidity and clouds for the second half. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 8 on. Counterweights at 280. INTERLOCKS: =========== none bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_19_1 Watcher: v2_8_6 MCP: v4_3_9 TPM: v2_1_3 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.1 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Started out clear and cold, then the humidity and particle count rose to closure conditions. Clouds also rolled in at this time. Flurries after 03:00. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We got on the sky a little late, as autofill tasks ran right up to sunset. As soon as we got the telescope, we mounted the imager. Skies were clear at sunset. We had some trouble getting the focus loop to converge, and were thinking this was due to the telescope being out of thermal equilibrium, even though the day staff set up fans in the enclosure and we had the east door open by 16:30. We finally started a science drift on stripe 86 N by 21:00. Seeing was bad. We stayed on the stripe anyway to see if the seeing problem was thermal in nature. Seeing gradually improved, but it is doubtful if this data is good enough to use. Seeing varied from 1.5 to 3", getting gradually better with time, so at least some of the effect was likely thermal. The 3.5-m was getting 1.5" seeing at the time. Since the seeing was improving, and marginally in spec, we decided to get a FASTT field done for this dark run. We imaged FASTT field C. The details for the runs and the Skippy results follow these general comments. We had a few short-lived ion pump pressure spikes. See the Problems section. The humidity started to rise as we were scanning the FASTT field. At midnight we put cartridge 8 on the cart in hopes that the humidity would go down, closed up, and put the cart in the enclosure. The humidity stayed high, then clouds rolled in and finally, just after 03:00, it started to snow lightly. It remained overcast with flurries until twilight. Sp2 threw a voltage watcher error. See the problems section. Run 1862 Stripe 86 N -------------------- This run had seeing that was mostly out-of-spec, ranging from 1.5 to 3" in i', although it did trend toward better seeing, so we did not switch to spectroscopy right away.
