GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Atsuko moved the rotator to 0 degrees without checking if the spectro dewar hoses were connected or not (and Steph forgot to tell her they had been connected) and broke sp2's spectro dewar connector. Larry who was on site, bravely took on the task of finding all the parts needed to fix it. It now has a brass fitting, which will need to be replaced with a new epoxy/fiberglass one before the autofill system is operational. While checking out the telescope, we noticed the MCP read the telescope posistions inaccurately (AZ=955, ALT=-2100, ROT=-64). We forced the MCP to accept AZ=121, ALT=90 and ROT=0 using the "p" command. (after moving the rotator to 0 degrees using the marking on the rotator). We fiducialized then to make sure MCP knew where the telescope is. When moving in ALT at 200000c/s, the 15 degree stop did not retract fast enough and the telescope aborted its move. Normally, we do not have any problem at this speed. We then dismounted the imager. While putting the imager into the doghouse, we noticed that the top of the camera rubbed against the foam on the dog house door. We found out that the door was not open all the way up. We pushed it up by hand and then moved the camera into the dog house. We noticed that while moving the dog house door, the penthouse was not fully closed -- the back side was a little bit lifted and not resting on the dog house, but instead was resting on the penthouse restraining bolts. Steph was able to pull the penthouse back into its place. When we mounted the imager again later, we had no problems with the doghouse door. Before opening the enclosure and starting taking the pointing model, we cleaned ALT and AZ encoders and surfaces. There was squashed moth residue on the alt drive surface (YUCK). Since neither of us had cleaned fiducials before, we were very careful and perhaps too gentle to really get them clean, but they were easily read during the pointing model, so apparently all is okay. With all the repair and preparatory work, we did not get on the sky until 22:00. We then proceded to obtain a 100 point pointing model. We had some problems at first with the active fiducial corrections not being applied to the alt and rot axes. We reset the fiducials for thses axes manually, and then the errors were small enough for MS.ON to take over. Perhaps we should consider setting the correction limits a little higher. We had a "(Windscreen touched in azimuth: CCW (Nov 14 01:00:52): Nov 14 01:01:07 MST )" error during the pointing model. We should see typically better results at our usual working altitudes & azimuths. We did not see any obvious outliers, so did not remove any points from the model. We then mounted the imager in order to do a final check of the collimation. We scanned stripe 11 S in the south southeast to check the out-of-focus donuts. Although not too bad, they showed some evidence of coma. We homed & relaxed the primary again, to see if that would make a difference in the donut illumination. Unfortunately, all this time, the clouds were steadily increasing. This combined with the Moon, did not give us very good contrast for our donuts. It did appear that homing & relaxing actually made the donuts worse. We homed & relaxed again, and the mirror numbers were stable. At this point, the clouds got thicker and we had to stop. We need to finish fine-tuning the collimation tomorrow night. It looks like there is some tweaking to be done. The MIG numbers during the pointing model are below in the mirror section. The numbers we got after homing & relaxing while checking collimation are immediately below: First home & relax: A: 0.0280 B: -0.0289 C: 0.0089 D: 0.2329 E: 1.8995 F: 0.0000 (See problems section) Second time: A: 0.0240 B: -0.0230 C: 0.0089 D: 0.2310 E: 1.8999 F: 0.0000 These are consistent, but are quite a bit different than the numbers during the pointing model... endNight doTpm was run. ***We had a perplexing problem with imager dewar 5 just after we closed. IMAGER - Dewar 5: ----------------- After stowing the telescope, Atsuko noticed that the i trim and tzero values for just dewar 5 had suddenly jumped out of spec and were close to their lower limit values. This happened while we were stowing the telescope. We called Saint Connie. A check of the power supply for dewar 5 showed nothing unusual. Connie had us reset the DACs for dewar 5 (cc setbuf followed by cc setdacs. Check voltages before & after w/ cc chip# vcheck), and this sent everything back to spec. There are 3 DACs per circuit board & 5 circuit boards per dewar (one per CCD). One of these controls the values we saw out of spec. It looks like they went back to their lower levels. Connie is perplexed why just dewar 5 would go out of spec since it is daisy chained with dewars 1-4. Is something loose since this occurred while we were moving to stow?? Connie would like Jon B. to look for something loose at the back of the camera during the day. We left the imager on the telescope. Note that just after resetting the DACs, we saw a few other voltages go briefly out of spec in the watcher. Connie thinks these are transient values from the reset, and sure enough, they went back in spec shortly.
