A pointing model and altitude sweeps have high priority. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Clouds, rain and lightning prevented us from going on the sky. We completed what tasks we could inside the enclosure. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with the engineering camera mounted. Counterweights at 120. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_19_0 Watcher: v2_8_6 MCP: v4_3_8 at first, then v4_3_9 TPM: v2_1_2 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Clouds, lightning, some rain and a small forest fire (under control) about 6 miles west of Sunspot. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Since bad weather prevented us from starting the pointing model at twilight, we worked on those shakeup tasks that could be done in the enclosure. Altitude sweeps were run using mcp version 4_3_8 at velocities of 50,000, 100,000, 2000,000 and 380,000 counts/s ,and version 4_3_9, at 100,000, 200,000 and 380,000 counts/s. One thing that is curious is that the errors in crossings look to be worse for lower speeds. We have questions/comments about how this data should be used to generate the best look-up table. (see problems section). At 23:30 (approx), the clouds began to clear out, so we opened for a pointing model. At 00:00, the clouds reappeared suddenly and we had to close again (sigh). We stayed closed the rest of the night. The following PRs were closed: ------------------------------ IOP/1117 - endNight fails in shipTape - shipTape has worked throughout the dark run. IOP/1392 - makeRunLog fails if you start a drift before it completes - The makeRunlog process now appears to complete normally. SOP/1061 - This PR is already closed. goSpecFocus, however, did complete successfully during this dark run's shakedown. IOP/1335 - new commands biasCheck and biasGen do not accept -help - Help strings now exist, although it would be nice if the help paragraph for biasCheck explains how the biases are compared. The following PRs were tested but not closed: --------------------------------------------- SOP/1274 - grabInstruments -drop doesn't work - Most of the time, the instruments are droppped gracefully, but roughly 20% of the time it will fail. Perhaps there is a conflict when another process has the port when grabInstruments -drop is issued? - See the problems section for details. SOP 1325/1326 - See if guiderMon looks better - We looked at some plates that previously had overlapping fibers on guiderMon. They still have overlapping fibers. For an example, look at cartridge 5, plate 421. In addition, we looked at the tar_to_two_tapes kludge. It still tars to both tapes. Plots of fiducial error vs,. time for two sets of sweeps can be found at sdsshost:/usrdevel/snedden/v4_3_8_alt.ps and v4_3_9_alt.ps. Each set of sweeps was done with a different MCP version (v4_3_8 and v4_3_9 as you have no doubt surmised). These plots clearly show that we lose counts with each sweep. We also see that upward sweeps (red) are quite different than downward sweeps (green). We also see internal consistency within each sweep. If a table is generated from multiple sweeps, with no fiducial correction, you introduce a negative variable offset (based on how many sweeps you did) into the fiducial table. You also have increased your error by averaging both upward and downward sweep data. The best solution is to have two lookup tables, one for fiducial crossings with altitude increasing, and the other for decreasing altitude. The values would also have to be corrected for dropped counts. We realize that our software is not designed to use two lookup tables (though we think it should). It seems that the next best solution is to generate a table that at least corrects for the dropped counts. In short, we have collected altitude sweep data, but we think that the data should be scrutinized before we generate a new table. We would like to discuss this further with RHL, JEG and any others who are interested. SOP "criticalDiskpSpace": ------------------------- There is a typo in initNight where "criticalDiskSpace" has become "criticalDiskpSpace". PR Sop/1425 was filed. Dan then closed it after making the fix. SOP grabInstruments -drop doesn't work: --------------------------------------- It took five tries to get grabInstruments -drop to fail. Below is the sop output for that failure. I had to log out the ports to clear the connection. Grabbing and dropping worked again once I did that. sp1> grabInstruments -handlers 80 IOP running as Backup Relay Server requestListen: listening Thu Oct 05 03:33:29 MDT 2000 1 sp1 camcheck Thu Oct 05 03:33:31 MDT 2000 1 sp1 ln2stat Thu Oct 05 03:33:32 MDT 2000 1 sp2 camcheck Thu Oct 05 03:33:34 MDT 2000 1 sp2 ln2stat 0 sp1> grabInstruments -drop 0 sp1> grabInstruments -handlers 80 CAMERA: FAILURE on ftelnet: connection error in ftelnet: connection refused MECH: FAILURE on ftelnet 1000000 1500000 2 sdss-ts-spectro.apo.nmsu.edu 2700 CAMERA: FAILURE on ftelnet: connection error in ftelnet: connection refused MECH: FAILURE on ftelnet 1000000 1500000 2 sdss-ts-spectro.apo.nmsu.edu 2300 Error: Couldn't open udp socket 30410 : Address already in use sp1> grabInstruments -drop 0 sp1> grabInstruments -handlers 80 Error: Couldn't open udp socket 30410 : Address already in use sp1> grabInstruments -handlers 80 Thu Oct 05 03:44:16 MDT 2000 6 sp1 ln2stat Thu Oct 05 03:44:17 MDT 2000 6 sp2 ln2stat 0 sp1> grabInstruments -drop 0
