Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2000 09:04:05 -0700 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5-meter Obs Log (MJD 51575) Monday January 31, 2000 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51575) Observers: Jeffrey Hayes (APO)--first shift Steph Snedden (APO)--second shift Visitors from Away: Jim Gunn (PU) Connie Rockosi (UC) Mike Carr (PU) A pointing model with many points and collimation were scheduled for tonight, however we were unable to open due to high humidity, clouds and snow. New optics were installed in the spectro guider. A cartridge was installed so that the focus could be set. An image of light down the guide fibers at best focus is in /data/spectr/guider/gimg0056.fits. Connie worked on spectro 2 well into the night. The engineering camera was re-installed at 03:00, so it will be ready for a pointing model tomorrow night. A note to the observers: Craig worked on SDSSHOST during the day, so the servers had to be re-started. Jeff started them on monx2, and they have been left running. Because of Connie's work on spectro 2, Steph killed and re-started the spectro server during the night. Steph took a few more darks for the spectro folks. Frames 1842, 1843 and 1844 are in the enclosure with no lights. The telescope was pointed at the zenith. Frame 1845 had a trouble light close to sp1's red camera. 1846 had the same light by sp 2 red camera, 1847 had the light by sp 1 blue camera and 1848 by sp 2 blue camera. VME node sd1 gave many error messages of "dsc E trcErr throttled ## -- WRONG num of pix??", so I'm not sure how useful these dark frames will be. After this it was time to shovel snow. No interlocks were bypassed...all should be enabled. The spectro 1 dewar was filled at 19:00 and again at 08:00. The spectro 2 dewar was filled at 01:00 and topped off at 08:00. There were no full dewars in the shed for the imaging camera. We had to take one from the 3.5-meter. Tomorrow night we will try once again to collimate and get a pointing model. We will also take biases all night on the imaging camera to test the DA and tape shipping pipeline. Weather: Skies ranged from mostly clear to overcast. Humidity was high throughout the night ...80%-97%. There were some flurries in the early evening, and it started to snow in earnest at around 04:30. By 07:30 there was between 3 and 4 inches of snow on the ground. Winds were out of the west until 20:00, then shifted to the north, ranging from 5-15 mph. Dust counts ranged from 500 to less than 100. The last shift ended at 10:00.
