The counterweights were set to 200 which seemed to put the telescope in balance quite nicely. We did have problems initially in communicating to the egnineering camera, but this was sorted out by 18:50. A reboot of the SCSI controller and the guider Mac seemed to do the trick. We then had to fiducialise the telescope. This was a somewhat prolonged process as we could not get the AZ amps to reset using the usual "*" command from the menu. A series of "SH" commands finally seemed to clear the problem and we were able to find all 3 axis fiducials in reasonably short order after this hurdle was crossed. As an interesting sidelight, when we reset the ALT amp., the ROT amp reset as well. We have not idea why this would be the case. We were on the sky and detecting natural photons by 19:30. Later, when Steph was filling spectro dewars, it took many "SH"s to clear repeated aborts on the rotator and get it to move. (PR mcp/747). We tracked down a permissions problem on the tpm -- it appears that Peregrine's directory /usrdevel/peregrin/tpm/iocBoot would not allow the execution of a startup script -- this was corrected and the tpm was rebooted successfully. We found stars in the CCD and set the focus to -2370 by 20:00. We then had problems centring our initial star, Capella, in the CCD chip. But by 21:30 we had found the problem (some user error --misunderstanding of how the different offset commands work, and some odd behaviour -- such as the star appearing to move out of the field when a gcam doread closely followed a focus change). Eventually, the star was centred and we were on the way to collecting Hartmann data. We observed a bit of drift in the focus and while Steph was moving the focus via the TCC the telescope stopped tracking. This required an "axis stop" and "axis init" to get the telescope back to Capella. This happened at 22:10. We had to reissue the "track" command on the TCC 3 times before the star was found on the CCD again (note that the telescope was pointing to Capella, as we verified that the star was centred in the finder telescope). We really have no idea what happened here. Also, the rotator stopped once during a track command. Jeff did an axis stop, axis init and re-issued the track command, and it completed normally. We got Russell's code working by 22:00 for moving the stage on the egineering camera. After a couple of telephone calls to Dan Long to clarify a few points on the practical aspects of taking the Hartmann images, we started in earnest at 23:45, again using Capella. Our focus was at -2370 initially. The Hartmann data +2.6 mm from nominal focus was taken on Capella, while the data taken -2.6 mm from nominal focus was takenm on Arcturus (numbers below). In all cases, the narrow-band I filter was used. This is in Jim's notes. Frames 138-140). A series of frames were taken to establish relative orientation of CCD and mirror. These are images 171-174 for a rot angle of 0 and 175-177 for a rot angle of 60 (phys). After completing the Hartmann tests, we found the primary mirror to be oscillating in B and C, with C having the higher amplitude. It was seen from an altitude of 80 deg down to 60 deg. The primary was lowered, then re-homed and the oscillations stopped. This needs to be looked at tomorrow. Following completion of the Hartmann test, we completed a small pointing model (12 points). The images are gimg0183.fits to gimg0195.fits. Copies are in Steph's home directory on 'host. TPOINT has not yet been run. Software: Ellyne cut new versions of: iop, sop (v. 3_6) on sdsshost, interlocks, and watcher (v. 2_4) on sdsscommish. The Spectro dewars were both filled at 04:00. Spectro 2 did start to warm as we delayed filling due to the Hartmann tests. Spectro 1 stayed cold. The imaging dewar was replaced with a full one at 05:30. The used dewar is still about half full and was left in the enclosure for use on the spectrographs. No interlocks were bypassed...all should be enabled. Weather: Variably cloudy and 15 mph winds from W. Dust counts ranged from 200-300 and humidity was at 28%. DIMM seeing varied from 1.3-2.0 arcsec (FWHM). We finished up at 06:45. --------------615906D3D992F1E283DEE401--
