Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 07:50:42 -0600 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5m obslog 990910 (MJD 51432) Friday September 10, 1999 (MJD 51432) Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log Tonight's Observing Team: Dan Long (APO) Steph Snedden (APO) Connie Rockosi (UC) Francisco Castander (UC) Bill Boroski (FNAL) Bob Nichol (CMU) David Schegel (PU) Robert Lupton (PU) Michael Strauss (PU) Tonight's plan called for getting focus and lskip data for an equatorial scan and an off-equatorial scan. If time permitted, we would then install a cartridge and switch to spectroscopy. The flat field screens are now motorized and can be controlled by the MCP. They will not operate unless the altitude is >= 15 degrees. The various commands are: | toggle incandescents on/off " toggle neon lamps on/off : toggle Hg-Cd lamps on/off ~ toggle flat field petals open/closed Since Connie pulled a manifold from the imager, we needed to re-check counterweight values tonight. 690 readout volts seemed to balance okay. While setting up the TCC, on our first axis init, the TCC actually set the altitude brake to the ON position, rather than clearing the brake. We tried it again, and the second time, it worked as it should. * Note that there is no TPM data log. When Dan tried a start (datafile) command, he got the following message: Couldn't mount NFS drive from sdsshost The on-equator scan was started at 21:00. We noticed that different frame numbers were displayed at different workstations at the same time. There appeared to be a problem with the gang transfers. Focus measurements were taken. Initially, best focus was found to be at about -1200. After moving out of focus and then back to the original position, we did not reacquire best focus. It clearly drifted. Before we were able to finish the focus test, the scan stopped abruptly at frame 942. Was this related to the gang transfer problem? We had to re-boot the crates twice, and were then able to complete the focus test. Note that we got an error message that these coordinates were outside the survey area (clearly not true). This needs to be fixed. The rotator only needed to be tweaked a small amount (0.03 degrees). We started the scan at 01:35 and the astrometrics died at 01:45. We got the following errors: error: line 265 (dsc_E_trcErr fatal - error creating frame and dsc E trcErr fatal - frmctx not ready - ccd=5 frm cur ln idx=114. We re-booted the astrometrics node and tried again. We then noticed that the RAs and decs were not being read into the headers...the TCC appears not to be broadcasting the packets. We stopped all TCC processes and did a telrun. We started the scanStripe again and got: error: waiting for command response from ad4 We re-booted ad4 (twice), did a tccClose and started scanning the stripe again. There were still no coordinate values being broadcast to the headers...At this point we tried a telstop, and telrun but could not get the scanStripe command to work. At this time, (02:30), the humidity started to rise and clouds started to move in. We decided to switch to spectro cartridge 1 with plate 214. We removed the imager without problems, except for the doghouse door sticking. It did not move out horizontally enough to then swing up and clear the roof of the doghouse. On the third try, moving the lever slowly, it cleared the roof. The corrector and cartridge installation went without a hitch and was completed by 03:30. The counterweights were set to balance at a value of 285 readout volts. We started to try to find an fk5 star near RA=0, dec=0, but had trouble, since we didn't know what the best focus should be. We went to a bright star (Gamma Peg), and did a spiral search to find it, but had no luck. SD1 died and had to be rebooted. * Note we also found a bug in the SOP code. If you try to do offsets to get a star down a fiber, the offsets are not recognized...they are all set to zero. Robert worked on debugging this. At 04:45 the MCP failed and we had an azimuth runaway. The telescope wrapped and stopped at the hard limit. Dan was able to push the telescope off the hard limit switches and unwrap the telescope back to stow position. The azimuth fiducial was reset. We then went to an fk5 star near RA=0, dec=0, were able to get it down a guide fiber and found the focus to be roughly between 1400-1500. At this time, civil twilight was underway. We put the imaging camera back on without incident, except that Connie also had trouble with the doghouse door, and called it quits at 07:00. LN2 Notes Spectro 1 filled at 20:00 and 07:00 Spectro 2 topped off at about 20:00 and filled at 07:00 Imager 180-l dewar replaced at about 23:00 Weather Summary The weather stayed partly cloudy for most of the night. The temperature dropped slowly from 60 deg F to the mid fifties. Humidity climbed to about 70%, and we almost closed at 02:30, but it then dropped to 60%. Wind was out of the west and ranged from 5-10 mph. Dust particle density stayed at or below 50 particles/ft^3. The DIMM showed seeing that averaged about 1.4" over the night, but fluctuated from 1.0" to 1.8". Dan & Steph
