Clouds thinned enough by 02:00 that first magnitude stars could be seen. However our only choice for a second half of the night plate was within 25 deg of the moon and already well over by 02:00. Given that and the fact a cartridge change would also be required, it was decided that we wouldn't have time to get anything useful, even if it miraculously cleared at 02:30 ( which it didn't ). The spectrograph and guider were powered down in preparation for optics removal Friday. This is to facilitate rotator servo work which may possibly cause oscillations. WEATHER Weather tonight started mostly cloudy. It clouded over completely by sunset, and there were several thunderstorms in the area to the north and west. It rained briefly around 22:00. The clouds persisted for the rest of the night, thinning after 01:00. Winds were light northeasterly, the dewpoint depression varied between 2.5 and 10 C. Dan
