Subject: 2.5m obs log 19991015 (MJD 51467) Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 07:04:58 -0600 (MDT) From: hayes@apo.nmsu.edu (Jeffrey Hayes) Friday October 15, 1999 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51467) Observing Team: Ellyne Kinney (APO) -- PIC Jeffrey Hayes (APO) David Schegel (PU) Eric Neilson (JHU) Scott Berles (UC) On for tonight, reobtain the hole in strip 82 S if the seeing is good, do some repeated imaging, and if we can, perhaps spectroscopy. We managed to get the fill-in of 82 S that was lost without too much trouble. We opened up at 20:15 with the corrector and the cartridge on, and the counterweights set to 290V. We did some flats and arcs amd then slewed to the centre of plate 189 on cartridge 2 at a nominal focus of 1500. Using an easyFiber, we could not find any stars. We tried to change the focus and we seemed to find the mirrors move (i.e. the values reported by migDebug did change). At 20:50 we power cycled the galils on both the primary and secondary to see if we could induce anything from the mirrors. We ended up homing both the primary and the secondary as the reboot seemed to have no effect. We had continued problems with getting the secondary and the TCC to communicate and Craig finally had to do a stop TCC to get the LAT functional again. We took the cartridge off at about 22:00, and by 22:20 we wre ready to be on the air. At 22:40 we were getting focus data for the run. Runs: 1052: biases 1053: test setup on the 82S strip/stripe. 1054: more test data of 82 S gap. Seeing by DIMM ~1.5'' and . The rotator angle from "findRotator'was 0.004 +/- 0.008. The focus was -1524.50. There appears to be a bug in "skyGang" because when we crossed the 0h position, we obtained a plot that had points separated by 90 degrees. The appearance is a quadrant calculation problem. However, once we were over the 0h point, it worked fine and we found a boreside offset of 60.5''. We then had a run-away -- the telescope went off to due W in AZ and to 20 degrees ALT, so that we ended the drift and moved the telescope back to 121 AZ so that we could move the ALT axis. The run away occured about 23:50. 1055: new drift on 82 S gap. Here we were to try and get the data but we had problems calculating the boresite offset: getting the sign right took most of the scan. 1056: science scan of 82 S (at last!). We started at 00:50 and let it go for 2 hours (i.e. 02:50). Seeing was about 2'' as measured on the camera. 1057: science scan of lambda=-130, equator -- the middle scans. Boresite offset = -0.02178 degrees. Seeing over 1.5''. Rotator offset =0.007 +/- 0.015 degrees. Started at 03:20 and ended at 04:20. 1058: science scan of lambda=-130, equator -- the middle scans, second drift. Boresite offset = -0.0217 degrees. Seeing about 2''. Same rotator offset. Started at 04:25 and at 05:00. 1059: science scan of lambda=-130, equator for the last time. We paused the second scan because t he tapes filled up. Also when we issued the slew command, we had a rotator run away to the 369 soft limit. Fortunately pushing off from the limit allowed one to get the rotator to move again. The archiver though was more of a problem as id6 would not respond. At this point, with the problems mounting, we decided that we would call it a night. Ellyne was forced to reboot both id3 and id6 in order for them to behave (this is a rather frightening thing to have to do at the end of each night, and must be fixed!). We put the primary back to -80000 to stop it oscillating. We put the camera away and powered it down, and powered down the spectrographs. We also put the corrector and cartridge 2 back on the telescope for the sake of balance. To confirm our decision for closing up, the gods let there be clouds in the sky. Ellyne ran "endNight" -- successfully (twice in a row!). LN2 fill schedule: SP1: 016:30 -- be be allowed to warm up SP2: 016:30 -- to be allowed to warm up Imager Dewar: 00:10 TMP file names: /mcptpm/tpm-51467-2.dat Seeing: The DIMM was available and the initial seeing was quite good -- 1.2''. From there it rose to 1.5'' at about 22:30. Weather: Clear and 15 mph winds from W. No dust and humidity at 28%. We finished up at 07:45. Ellyne and Jeffrey
