Subject: 2.5m obs log 19991014 (MJD 51466) Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 07:34:30 -0600 (MDT) From: hayes@apo.nmsu.edu (Jeffrey Hayes) Thrusday October 14, 1999 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51466) Observing Team: Ellyne Kinney(APO) -- PIC Jeffrey Hayes (APO) David Schegel (PU) Eric Neilson (JHU) Scott Berles (UC) Connie Rockosi (UC) - by phone Jim Annis (FNAL) - by phone On for tonight, reobtain the hole in strip 82 S if the seeing is good, do some repeated imaging, and if we can, perhaps spectroscopy. We did manage to obtain the focus sweep in reasonable seeing (about 1.4''), but unfortunately, that was as much as we could accomplish. We started the TMP logging at 19:00. We also had to wait on French and John Briggs to fix counterweight 2 on the telescope. They finished up at about 19:00 as well. Jon Brinkman was working on the umbilical line (pumping it down) till just before this. The all sky camera was up and running at about 18:30, and the DIMM was opened, but we again had problems getting the DIMM to track, because the telescope had been bumped and was not aligned to the North properly. Also, Scot K, in conjuction with Jim Annis have a new version of "iop" set to fix the recurring problem with "endNight". If this works, it will be made the current version. One currently needs to "setup iop v3_4_3". French reset the MCP so that AZ fiducial 32 at 105 degrees is now the valid fiducial. In case of MCP reboot the way to set the fiducial is: MCP-> set_primary_fiducials 0,32,27155840 where 0, is AZ axis, 32 is the fiducial to use and 27155840 is the encoder position. To find the appropriate encoder position, type MCP-> print_fiducials We were on the ready to go by 20:30. We had problem initially with the Archiver. id4 reported mechnical problems, but these errors went away once we remounted the tape by hand. We took a series of biases to make a start on the night. When we issued the "goDrift -bias" we had the follwing message back in "iop": camera linestarts differ from last run camera is now 26322 # MICROSECONDS was last at 26343 # MICROSECONDS Is this ok? [no/yes]: yes We parked on the equator, meridian to check for the seeing on the camera Runs for tonight: 1047: short bias to remove CRs and test aliveness 1048: 30 frames of biases. 1049: setup frames for focus, lskips, etc. Focus loop was started, and we were getting images about 1.2'' to 1.5''. We then did a couple of lskips and found that the rotator angle was +0.096 +- 0.454. The seeing stayed at about 1.3'' by 22:00, but on the all-sky camera we were picking up cirrus. We finished up the scan at 22:00 and decided to reboot the the secondary galil. This did not cure the persistent message we were getting from the TCC: 0 0 F Modu="prt_Read"; Text="read timed out on port LTA10:" 0 0 F Modu="mir_o_MoveOneGalil"; Text="could not specify new positions for Sec mirror actuators" so we logged out the port. This did fix the problem but then we needed to homed the secondary. We had some problems homing the secondary, as it did not find home position the first few times. On the 3rd try we obtained the following: "unable to find reverse limit switch or unable to bounce". After this, we were able to home and restart collimate. 1050: new scan at equator, meridian but using the swindle this time (this is a test to see if the swidle data will populate the headers of the astrom files correctly with RA and Dec as the appropriate keywords in the header.) We found the new focus = -1600, and then restarted the focus loop. The seeing was about 1.4''. We looking at the focus loop plot however, we found that the secondary did not appear to be doing anything. As we were getting ready to go the focus sweep, we obtained the following messages from the TCC: 0 0 I TCCStatus="TTT","NNN"; TCCPos=-0.66,57.21,89.31; AxePos=-0.66,57.21,89.31 0 0 F Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="too many replies on port LTA19:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="the following replies were read:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="ERR: OUT OF MEMORY" 0 0 F Modu="axe_o_Move"; Text="command failed for IR" 0 0 F Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="too many replies on port LTA19:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="the following replies were read:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="ERR: OUT OF MEMORY" 0 0 F Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="too many replies on port LTA19:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="the following replies were read:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="ERR: OUT OF MEMORY" 0 0 F Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="too many replies on port LTA19:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="the following replies were read:" 0 0 I Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="ERR: OUT OF MEMORY" 0 0 F Modu="axe_o_Move"; Text="command failed for TEL1, TEL2, IR" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="initializing axes: TEL1, TEL2, IR" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="locking ports: TEL1, TEL2, IR" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="resynchronizing I/O stream for: TEL1, TEL2, IR" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="initializing and setting time of: TEL1, TEL2, IR" 0 0 I Modu="axe_o_Init"; Text="sending init files (if they exist) to: TEL1, TEL2 , IR" 0 0 I AxisInit="TTT" 0 0 F Modu="axe_i_SchMove"; Text="tracking failed; axes halted" 0 0 F Modu="exe_Track"; Text="no longer tracking" 0 0 I TCCStatus="TTT","NNN"; TCCPos=-0.66,57.21,89.31; AxePos=-0.66,57.21,89.31 0 0 I TCCStatus="HHH","NNN"; TCCPos=NaN,NaN,NaN; AxePos=-0.66,57.21,89.31 We did an "axis stop" immediately, which caused all the Modu="prt_ReadReplySet"; Text="ERR: OUT OF MEMORY" messages to be repeated. As we were parked on the equator, we continued to try and get data for the focus sweep, but found that, no matter where the focus was requested, there was no motion of the secondary. This prompted a telephone call to Connie, who advised that collimation and focus moves will not work unless the telescope is tracking. We then determined that port LTA19 is the communications port between the TCC and the MCP. We then rebooted the MCP (which then required resetting both the valid AZ fiducial, as discussed with French, and refiducialising the telescope. This was finished up at about 01:30. NOTE: the RA and Dec header keywords in data taken with the swindle and without it are populated incorrectly -- they both contain the AZ and ALT of the telescope -- not the RA and Dec. 1051: engineering data and focus sweeps. After the MCP reboot we tried to get the focus sweep data for JEG. The best focus, before using the focus loop was -1600, with seeing 1.4'' to 1.6'', in spite of the cirrus. At about 02:50, the focus loop settled down to where we could perform the focus sweep. Note that the rotator correction as found by "findRotator" was -0.000 +- 0.012. The files used for the focus sweep are: Run 1051 fo=-1677 forward Focus Frame no. -1977 53 -1777 56 -1727 62 -1677 65 -1627 68 -1577 71 -1377 74 Run 1051 fo=-1677 reverse Focus Frame no. -1977 168 -1777 171 -1727 174 -1677 177 -1627 180 -1577 183 -1377 186 NB the command used for the reverse track was: track 60.0483,0 fk5 /rota=267.754560 /rotty=obj /scanvel=(-0.00417807,0) we also found that the rotator offset was +0.008 +- 0.008. The focus sweep data lives on /data/photo/optics/51466. We stopped the drift at 04:20. As the stripe 82 S was below the horizon, it was decided to go over to spectroscopy. This proved to be a problem as we could not get the corrctor lens to latch properly. We tried a number of times without success, and by the time we gave up, it was about 05:25. At this point, there was no time left so we remounted the mosaic camera back onto the telescope. This was done by 06:00, at which point French appeared and we told him of the corrector problems, the odd behaviour of the secondary and the use of AZ fiducial 32. As a final bit we put the primary back to -80000 to stop it oscillating. Ellyne ran "endNight" -- successfully!!.
