Briggs" Subject: 2.5m obslog 981122, MJD 51140 Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998 (MJD 51140) Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5-m Observing Log Lupton and Annis on camera; Briggs running telescope. Opened at sunset, but heavy cirrus to about 02:30. Seeing generally about 1.5 arcsec, improving towards dawn. Annis reports on camera operations and ongoing focus control (galil) problems: >We had the usual galil problems: loss of communications >with the galil, and having to home the galil more than once. > >We lost ad3 twice tonight to the bus error problems. > >The last run, 308, is probably photometric with seeing of 1.1-1.2". >It starts at low latitude and heads high. It is a 100,0, >except that is is shifted a full ccd to the South. > >It is clear that we need to solve both the galil problems >and ad3 problems before we next run, otherwise we merely waste our time. The west door and limit are functional, but the limit switch "feeler" requires adjustment and probably a change-out to a longer one for improved operation. Operators: keep an eye on the limit as you run the door. The MPC required rebooting before I could log in from the enclosure laptop and bed telescope. Dan Long's Mac crashed once during the night, leading Lupton to comment that if running XTERM windows via a Mac for operations leads to too many crashes, then we should avoid using a Mac as an interface. The telescope did not home to the azimuth stow position, but I found home easily enough with the "J,K" manual slow motions in the Menu program. Although the 2.5-m is a finicky devil, it's clear that things get easier with it after a few nights experience. Morning zodiacal light was quite brilliant today; gegenschein was obvious several days ago. --J. W. Briggs. ******************************************************************** John W.
